Friday Afternoon Video Check In Hello all – Please view:
-
I am working (work every other Sunday), but look forward to the next one!
-
@michael —
Sorry to miss this while traveling! I’m now in Seattle for the summer, and the library system here is recovering from a ransomware attack that has essentially forced the branch librarians back to the olden days of physical check-outs using an offline spreadsheet. (Libby not working, holds not working, online account access not working, etc.) This has inspired me to explore cybersecurity issues for libraries this semester and perhaps also the importance of staff remaining trained on some analog skills in addition to digital tools. Please let me know if this will be covered in our readings/chats — or you have other recommended resources relate to this topic.
—@nicole287-
@nicole287 our school has some very robust classes on cyber security issues. I don’t think there is much in the hyperlink library, but you could do your choose your own adventure module to do a deep dive into how libraries are responding to those kind of issues. I would be fine with that.

Behold! Our OPML File! Hello everyone! I just finished the OPML for all the blog URLs. I am excited to add it to my Feedly and dive into your blogs this […]
-
Mission accomplished…I think!
Just to be clear is this just another website that aggregates specific site information? So if I want to know who is posting what I go to Feedly and not this site? I guess I’m wondering what the benefits of Feedly are compared to just looking at the “Recent Comments” and “Recent Posts” sidebar on this site. I’m gathering that I can add other networks, interests in Feedly and not here but is there something else I’m missing?
Thanks for the insight! 🙂
-
@ayeouest good question. The feed reader will serve as an awareness tool. If you choose to use it, you can easily see who has post and what their blog titles might be. If you click on one of those blog posts that is coming to the feeder, it will take you to the site and that’s where you can interact by leaving a comment, etc. the things I want students to take away from this class is experience with using awareness, tools, or monitoring feeds for their future professional learning experiences. You can also go to the sitewide activity to see every thing happening on our section site. Recent comments and recent post on the sidebar of this site are just for comments on my blog post Also good morning from the Traverse City airport.
-
Thank you! That makes sense. I will actually be in Traverse City this weekend! Hope Myrtle Beach has been rejuvenating.
-
@ayeouest I hope you had fun in TC!

Reporting back — OPML addition to Feedly: success! 🎉
-
@alexisljohnson thanks for diving in and getting it set up.
-
-
I think I got. If I did the download visual was super cool.
-
@carlys yay!
-
-
OPML added to Feedly! I’ve only sort of dabbled with RSS feeds, but haven’t developed a habit for them (yet!) – thank you for the introduction. My tendency would be to just stick with checking in here on the ‘Site-Wide Activity’ tab, as loads of updates can spark feelings of overwhelm. Let’s see how this goes! (and @michael, please enjoy your vacation!!)
-
@caroline Thanks. yesterday was huge but all family is here and settled. I was exhausted last night but now up and working on class watching the sun come up over the Atlantic.
-
-
I was able to successfully add the OPML to Feedly! This was my first time doing this type of interaction with RSS feeds.
-
I’ve had success adding the OPML to Feedly and have been having fun exploring the feed. In some of my previous courses it’s been overwhelming to stay on top of things like Canvas discussion boards, so I’m enjoying having a different way to communicate and track content.
-
I have no clue if I am doing this correctly, but I am hopefully sharing my URL in the correct spot!
https://287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu/dossey/ -
I downloaded both the OPLM and imported it into the Feedly.
-
I noticed that the post to share our blog URL for the OPML file (https://287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu/blog/creating-an-opml-file-for-your-blogs) is closed for comments, so hopefully it’s okay to share it here!
-
@idyll I see it in my feeds, It is listed under Idyll.
-
-
@samfeta27 @mdossey @alana42 @hpete24 @caroline Yay!
I just posted all the blogs that came in after I shared the OPML for folks to add. Thanks for diving in.
-
I just now got to this- very cool!

@crain thank you for diving in.

I took this class because some parts of technology I am ignorant in, but want to learn…. hence yet another question- is Feedly free to use? Says free sign up on their page, but don’t know anything about it.
-
@crain There is a free version and a paid version. You do not need to pay to use for class. We’ll have about 35 feeds in the OPML.
-
I think it’s a good question to ask Jennifer, as I find working with digital technology tools that “free” can mean a lot of different things, and some tools free accounts can actually be pretty limiting. I’m glad that Feedly can handle what we need for class with a free account though!

Probably a silly question, but I am assuming we can change formats of the blogs as we write them? For example, can we dabble in a couple written, a couple video, a couple podcast, or would you prefer us to choose a format and stick with it?
-
@crain Yes – any manner of media is fine for blogging. I have a post about that queued up soon.

Hi Jennifer!
I love that your school had favorite book character day for Halloween. One school where I worked had historical Halloween, where students chose an historical figure to research and then dress up as, and we had a timeline (not a parade!) to bring the whole school together – it was always fun to see who was chosen the most in any given year, and how the students came to pick who they picked.
Where in Australia did you live when you studied abroad? I lived in Perth and Geelong for about 1.5 years total many years ago, and loved it. I’d happily move back there.
Your quilts are beautiful! My college roommate and I learned to quilt while we were in school, and her skills have grown exponentially (she’s an art professor now, and fabric arts are part of her classes), while mine have poked along slowly but I’ve made my way to Hawaiian quilting, which I enjoy, though it takes me much longer depending on how quickly I get into the groove of the applique process. Do you have any favorite quilt artists?
Looking forward to learning together with you this summer!
– Caroline-
Our fifth graders always did “bottle biographies”- decorated a two liter like their historical figure to go along with their report, and some dressed as their character as well. Presented to younger grades.
I lived in Burwood (suburb of Melbourne) and went to Deakin Uni for a semester, but then traveled up and down the East coast… I would so go back even though that was 2006!
I want to move away from traditional quilting and more towards art quilting. Kathy McNeil is an artist I recently discovered (https://www.kathymcneilquilts.com/). Hawaiian quilting takes time, I am impressed! I got the quilting bug early, in 4th grade I was homeschooled and part of the pioneer unit was making a 9 patch by hand and loved it!

Love seeing all your pictures, what wonderful work experiences you’ve had! I look forward to sharing the experience of this class with you. Cheers!

Thanks, Ashley!

@crain it is so wonderful to read about your time in Australia. The photos are great too. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Australia three times and spend a total of 12 weeks there the first was a five city speaking tour in 2008 followed by a research visit in 2009. If my memory serves, I did focus groups for academic librarians at Deacon because I remember going way out into the suburbs of Melbourne in 2018 I was visiting professor at University of Queensland and spent four weeks in the country meeting librarians and doing more research. Australia is one of my favorite places in the world. Sorry for the long response. 🇦🇺
Thanks for sharing all of your background of what brought you to this class. Also, thank you for your forward eye on our module resources.😀
Welcome to #hyerlib!
-
Deakin was the last tram stop before you had to convert to buses, so as a uni student it was cheap and effective to get into the city. Loved Melbourne better than Sydney (too many people!). I would go back in a heartbeat if I knew I had the finances and job!

Welcome, Rachel! I bet outdoors in Colorado is beautiful.
-
Hi Rachel!
I love that you’re a bikepacker! We ran into a few bikepackers while hiking the Colorado Trail many years ago, and Colorado seemed like a fantastic place for it. Have you heard the Radiolab episode on competitive bikepacking? (https://radiolab.org/podcast/alone-enough)
I’d be curious to hear how your different library experiences (and working in different states) have been for you, and what you’ve found to be unique to the libraries or common to most libraries. Are you planning to stay in Colorado, or does life keep you on the move?
Looking forward to learning with you this summer 🙂
– Caroline-
Thanks! Yes, Colorado is a wonderful place for tons of fun outdoor adventures! We’ve been here for six years now and don’t have any plans of moving. The idea of living in one place for too long is strange to me (especially after living in five states in five years), but we are really enjoying it so far. The community and outdoor recreation here are unlike anything we’ve experienced elsewhere. Thanks for sharing that Radiolab episode; I can’t wait to give it a listen.
As far as working in libraries in different states, I would say that one of the most visible differences is in the payscales for the exact same position. I had the same job title when I was working in Kentucky as in California, but the salary in KY was less than half of what I was making before! It can make moving between states/libraries challenging when you cannot guarentee that you’ll be paid similarly for your skill level/job duties. I think that our library funding mechanisms (predominately property taxes) make these types of differences more pronounced. In terms of the day-to-day of life in the public library, many of the libraries have felt similar. While local priorities and cultures are different, all of the libraries are operating within similar missions and with similar guiding principles.
-
-
@rcsyme “… I have become increasingly interested in the ways in which libraries can co-create with their communities.”
This is right on target and totally fits within the purview of the hyperlinked library. Also Gunner is incredibly handsome.
