Getting Started: Staying Connected to the Hyperlinked Learning Community

One of the most important habits for success in INFO 287 is staying connected to the course community. The Hyperlinked Library is built on participation, conversation, and shared learning, so regular engagement with the course site and your classmates’ work is essential.

Check In Regularly

Plan to visit the course site at least every day or two throughout the semester. New announcements, assignment reminders, blog posts, and community discussions will appear regularly.

A quick check-in might include:

  • Reading the latest course blog post or announcement
  • Reviewing recent activity from classmates
  • Exploring newly published reflection posts
  • Checking comments and discussions
  • Looking ahead to upcoming modules and assignments

Think of the course site as the central hub of our learning community.

Follow the Community

One of the strengths of the Hyperlinked Library model is learning from one another. Throughout the semester, your classmates will share ideas, reflections, examples, and creative work that can deepen your understanding of course concepts.

You may choose to:

  • Visit the Activity page regularly
  • Browse recent blog posts from classmates
  • Follow peers whose work resonates with your interests
  • Comment on and engage with others’ reflections
  • Share resources and ideas that inspire you

Participation helps transform the course from a collection of readings into a collaborative learning experience.

Using RSS (Optional but Recommended)

RSS remains one of the most powerful ways to follow a large number of blogs and information sources efficiently.

If you’d like to use a feed reader, Michael will provide access to course RSS feeds and other resources to help you follow community activity. Popular RSS readers currently include:

    • The Old Reader — https://theoldreader.com
    • Feedly: https://feedly.com
    • Inoreader: https://www.inoreader.com
    • NewsBlur: https://www.newsblur.com
    • Readwise Reader: https://readwise.io/read

Using a feed reader allows you to see new posts from classmates and the course blog in one convenient place rather than visiting multiple sites individually.

Find a Workflow That Works for You

Some students prefer checking the course site directly. Others use RSS readers, browser bookmarks, email notifications, note-taking apps, or personal dashboards.

The specific tool matters less than developing a consistent habit of engagement.

The goal is simple: stay curious, stay connected, and participate in the conversations that emerge throughout the semester.

A Hyperlinked Approach to Learning

The most rewarding experiences in INFO 287 often come from unexpected discoveries—an insightful blog post from a classmate, a discussion that sparks a new idea, or a resource shared by someone across the learning community.

Check in often, explore broadly, and allow yourself to follow interesting paths. The Hyperlinked Library is built on connections, and those connections begin here.
