Hey all – I follow the Professors sub reddit and the uptick in posts from educators all over regarding student use of AI in class writing is off the charts. I have always taught the Hyperlinked Library on a foundation of radical trust with students and will continue to do so. One of the goals of this class for me is to get you all thinking, creatively and widely about what is possible in libraries. It’s all about trying on ideas for your own personal practice of librarianship. So I encourage you to do that in all of the writing and media creation in this class.
That said, if you utilize any type of AI in preparing your assignments, that is fine — you just need to let me and the class know via citation etc. I think we need to find our way into this very new landscape together and figure out how it might be beneficial to librarians, educators, students, etc.
I will share the newly adopted AI policy from our school:
SJSU School of Information AI Assisted Software Academic Integrity Policy
v1 adopted on September 14, 2023
The use of ChatGPT and any other AI-assisted software must be cited as a reference source, to be consistent with the requirement to cite reference and quotations where ideas and sentences are used from other sources. Failure to cite the use of any AI-assisted software constitutes a violation of SJSU policy F15-7 and the School of Information’s academic integrity policy.
This policy is not exhaustive. If students are uncertain as to how to proceed with the use of AI-assisted software in their coursework, it is their responsibility to confer with the instructor of that particular course.
In the APA editorial style, you are to cite the use of AI-Assisted software as follows:
- For the in-text citations (places in the narrative where you used the tool)
(OpenAI, 2023)
- For the reference
OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Sep 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat
For more about how to cite ChatGPT and other AI-assisted software, refer to APA.
Thank you for providing this information!
