Hi @michael! I don’t see a comment from you on my most recent reflection on Hyperlinked Environments. https://287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu/maggierogers/2024/03/03/hyperlinked-environments-issues-library-theatre-partnerships/
Certainly could be user error on my part. 🙂
Thanks! -

This wonderful idea reminds me of a line from Maya Angelou’s poem Continue (which I just learned was written as poem to celebrate Oprah Winfrey’s 50th birthday):
“My wish for you
Is that you continue
Continue
To be who and how you are
To astonish a mean world
With your acts of kindness” -

Hi Christine! Schmidt’s article also stood out to me. My favorite question is “Tell me about a time when you were focused and lost track of time.” In addition to trying to work this into a library survey, I could see this question being used effectively in a reader’s advisory conversation. I’m looking forward to trying it!

Thank you Roya! I’m so glad to know that your son found the library as a place at school that he could feel comfortable with “others.” Origami provides a nice focal point for students who might need to settle themselves down physically and mentally — keeps the mind and the hands busy. I’m always so impressed with the kids who can make those teeny…[Read more]

Thanks so much Ciera! I feel really lucky to be working in a library and going to library school at the same time. Reflecting on my practice and then trying new things is so rewarding. It’s giving me courage to try new things too. I so appreciate your support on this journey!

Thanks so much Emily! I REALLY appreciate your positive comments. I felt like there were so many ideas floating in my head after last week’s readings that I had trouble distilling down my thoughts. I’m pleased that they resonated with you. I completely agree about middle school being the time of so much change in people’s lives — the emotional…[Read more]

Reflection on Hyperlinked Communities: Belonging and IdentityFor this reflection, I created a PowerPoint presentation. I’m not entirely certain of the best way to present it in WordPress so I’m including a link here: Hyperlinked Communities: Belonging and Identity I hope it works!

Maggie,
I just flipped through your PowerPoint and not only did it work, it was exceptional! I was engaged and moved with every click. Thank you for sharing these insprirational observations of middle school students. Middle school is when most humans experience some of the most overwhelming changes in their lives and school becomes almost secondary. At least that is how I felt. The way your library is welcoming but not pushy or super restrictive is an ideal environment for this age group. These kids are at such a pivotal part of their lives and to have a place to go to feel welcomed and part of a community on their own terms is amazing. I really enjoyed this post and I also appreciated it being in a PowerPoint presentation. Very easy to digest. Superb job!

I’m pleased that they resonated with you. I completely agree about middle school being the time of so much change in people’s lives — the emotional and physical changes alone are so much to manage. Not to mention learning how to navigate a larger physical environment with changing schedules and classes! Academics have their place, but taking care of these humans and their moods and struggles seem more important than ever. Thanks again!

Hi Maggie,
Thank you for sharing this fantastic powerpoint! I can’t tell you how much I value you sharing observations from your library in this class and breaking down some of the patterns you see. I am taking with me your examples of social identities among your students. I can’t wait to read more about this on your journey in this class!-

Hi Maggie! Thank you for your brilliant powerpoint! One of my kids has extreme ADHD and struggled socially in school. Origami got him through the middle school years. He would often end up at the library and make elaborate origami pieces. I think he really appreciated the library as place to be along with “others”.

I’m always so impressed with the kids who can make those teeny tiny stars and hearts from the long strips of paper. A lot of focused energy there! Thanks again.

@maggierogers The linking to your google slides was absoilutely the right way to do it!
This resonated with me:
A hyperlinked community is one where libraries support student identity and
provide a place for students to feel that they belong.❤️ this!

Thanks Ciera! It’s really fun to learn what students are interested in doing in the library. Hi Maggie, I appreciate how much of your own experience and reflection you bring into this library post. It’s really exciting to see how students have taken ownership of your library space for such a wide variety of activities. I’m inspired to see how your library has been able to activate young people to bring their own interests into the space as much as learning from you- kudos! I hope that you keep us updated on your journey making adjustments to your practice this semester, I would love to hear more.

Thanks Ciera! It’s really fun to learn what students are interested in doing in the library. I think about that in relation to one of the articles we read (but I can’t remember which one!) where a university library was being remodeled and the entry area was empty of furniture so students just re-arranged what was in the library (and perhaps brought in bean bag chairs and pillows?). They made a space that was useful to them even if it wasn’t the intent of the architect and planners! I plan to stay open to ideas from my students and find new ways to enrich a middle school library space.

Thanks @michaelstephens! It is definitely the relationships and interactions I have with my students that keep me going back to work each day. Some days are harder than others in a middle school but the connection with these kids is so intrinsically motivating for me. And Montreal has been a fun city to explore — there is so much going on there!

Thanks Christie! It was definitely my daughters who introduced me to the other Maggie Rogers when they were teenagers. I think my two favorites songs of hers are Alaska and Light On. I am also trying to expand my listening so any suggestions are always appreciated! Thanks again, and looking forward to learning with you too.

@maggierogers what a great topic to cover for this post. You gather some interesting examples to demonstrate the power that comes from information institutions and theatrical entities getting together. Perhaps going forward many public libraries may include performative spaces.
