  • Thank you, @claireburke! : )
Yes, you should give Rush a listen! My favorites are Freewill, Fly By Night, and Limelight. ; )

Thank you so much for this, @michael . Such a crazy time.

  • Hi Millicent (@inabookbind)!

All of your good examples made me think about how I kept noticing the word “delight” in our recent readings (like the “Do We Need Libraries?” one) — people want to be delighted when they go to the library! And it’s good for librarians to keep this in mind, because people have so many other options when it comes to…[Read more]

  • Hi @claireburke,

I came for the meme and stayed for the writing. ; )

I just wanted to say that Coelho’s point about how fines essentially only punish the people who really *need* the library is so spot on. I remember collecting a fine once, when I was working at a library in a very well-off town, and this woman wrote a check for her…[Read more]

  • Hi @pfulumirani,

As a “very online” person (ha), I’ve taken note of communities like “booktube” and “bookstagram”, and of how younger people are taking an interest in libraries these days – it’s so great. And I think you’re right that, unless libraries are taking full advantage of engaging with this group of people in their meeting grounds,…[Read more]

Thanks so much! The pandemic brought so many horrible things, but lots of good too, when it comes to confronting things that needed to be changed (like letting people work remotely in some cases), and getting industries to adopt tech more quickly (I’m thinking about virtual conferences and things like that). That is such a great…[Read more]

  • Hi @diamondpatrick,

Yes! COVID was like the mother of all changes – for everyone. It definitely made me assess some things in my professional life and personal life. And we should both try to keep tackling little bits of change – for practice. ; ) Thanks for reading this!

I’m taking Government Information Sources along with Hyperlinked this semester, and that (along with our upcoming elections) has my mind on civics. It was cool to come across this program that the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh is hosting next month. Mocktails and trivia!! 😀

    • Hi Terri,
Thanks for sharing! I totally know what you mean about change being uncomfortable — I’ve always struggled with adapting to change too. Especially when some of our experiences with change have not been so good. The example you brought up around COVID is a great example. It definitely forced a lot of people, and definitely libraries, to assess access and embrace change. I’m also heartened to hear at the end that you were able to make that adjustment in the workflow to better you and patrons. Maybe if we start with small changes, it’ll make the bigger changes easier to adapt to over time for you and me both!
      Thanks again for sharing!

    • Hi Terri!
What an inspiring story. Change can definitely be uncomfortable and need I say, scary. I agree that we need to embrace change and become versatile ourselves for whatever may come our way. Libraries have shown so much resilience–especially after reintegrating themselves after the pandemic. Funny enough, I thought of another good song that talks about change–Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel.

      • Hi @mickeysosa97!
Thanks so much! That is such a great song (gives me goosebumps sometimes). And I honestly wanted to make a playlist when I was working on this – so many good songs about change! ; )

    • Hi Terri,
I really enjoyed reading your post and how raw it was. I think so many people have fears about change, me included for SURE, and I appreciate how candid you were in your post. I “wholeheartedly” (see what I did there??) agree with the idea of necessary change in order to help the community we serve and not for our own wants/needs/ego. As someone who’s never listened to Rush but have heard AMAZING things about them, I’ll have to jump on board and give them a listen driving around today. Once again, thanks for your post!

    • Hi Terri,
I’m also a Rush fan (I saw them in Irvine in 2002 and loved it!!), and that part of the reading really resonated with me as well. Actually, in 2015, I heard an interview with Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia, where he quotes the same line from Tom Sawyer (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05vstzl) as a way to think about the nature of Wikipedia. It’s stuck with me ever since.

I also identify with your story of changes –> burnout –> running away. When COVID came I was working in college admissions and tried to streamline some of our outmoded policies and procedures. I remember hearing something much worse than “We’ve always done it this way.” My boss would say instead, “It used to be even worse,” meaning that I should be thankful and content that at least we weren’t still doing things by abacus and cuneiform.

I appreciate your highlighting the difference between incremental and drastic change. It’s good to remember that sometimes incremental change isn’t possible and that drastic change is needed!

      • Hey @arthurkolat!
        Awesome! I saw them Hartford in 1985! : )

“It used to be even worse” is not an ideal thing you want to hear from your boss…

Thank you for reading and commenting!

@inabookbind! Hi, Millicent! A YouTuber I like used Lavendaire’s planner a couple years ago – it looked really good! That is so great, that it helped you on such a deep level. I honestly would feel lost without mine. Thanks for the link. : )
