@kylehanson I am actually originally from Memphis and had no idea about this – how cool! I also love the cell phone lending program that you mentioned. That is so important in our times now, as everyone has a cell phone and is connected – what a great idea!

Lilia,
I actually have never had a TikTok before, but BookTok has made me interested and thank you for sharing that. I also love “Dear Stranger” library project and the idea behind it. Penpalling has always been a hobby of mine, and it’s a great way to share information and get to know others.

Michelle,
That is so amazing that the library helped you and your family learn English, and that it created a strong love of the library for you. I agree that libraries should focus on their regular patrons a great deal, as they are the ones that visit the most and use the facilities the most. While we should definitely think about everyone…[Read more]

@kylehanson It is pretty interesting that many people claim the importance of libraries, yet never step foot inside. Or as you mentioned, how some complain about the lack of books, yet do not even really read or check out books to begin with. I think many people just have this nostalgic idea of what a library is and what they grew up with, and…[Read more]

@deniseml It would be be amazing if my local public library expanded their hours and had something like this, then I would probably use the facilities more. My schedule is so busy with school and two jobs, and sometimes it’s just hard to make it there. It would also be nice to see some of the group activities and workshops provided at later hours,…[Read more]

Kiana, I really enjoyed reading your post and I agree with you on so many levels. We all want to expand our services and provide programs to help our patrons expand their knowledge, but it’s also important to focus on basic needs as well. We can do this by supplying food pantries or free clothing. We can also provide pamphlets and information…[Read more]

Hi Millicent,
when I listened to Ciara Eastell’s TEDx Talk, that part where she discussed the mourning man looking for a how-to-handle grief book hit me right in the feels. Libraries should be definite safe spaces for having those tough conversations that need to be discussed, even if uncomfortable. Thanks for including the YouTube video and very happy to know that, through constructive and open dialogue, the community was able to heal. I’m including an article I read in a class last year that goes along with your blog in case you want to check it out: https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/2016/04/15/perspectives-islam-montana/

@arthurkolat Thank you for sharing Perusall! I have never heard of this website, but I love the idea of everyone getting to annotate together and share stories, pictures, and ideas throughout. What a fun concept! It’s like a very interactive online book club, and I can’t wait to use this and share with others. Also, I love that you made a video.…[Read more]

@terribeth I agree, and I’ve noticed many librarians have great ideas but aren’t sure how to implement them or where to start. It’s always a good idea to start with the community and just simply ask them what they are looking for or what they would actually like to take part in, and then making those things or activities as accessible as possible.

I really enjoyed reading your post and you have some really thought-provoking ideas. I have also thought about this a lot – how the children’s programs get packed while the adult programs usually do not have many in attendance. I think this is in large part due to the library needing to reach out more, online and in person – making these services…[Read more]

@claireburke I love this post! I also love the idea of giving rewards for returning books early or on time, instead of punishing for being late. There should also be rewards for those who may not have returned the book, but rechecked it out in the proper way and in timely fashion – because not everyone reads at the same speed. I love many of the…[Read more]

Hi Millicent (@inabookbind)!
All of your good examples made me think about how I kept noticing the word “delight” in our recent readings (like the “Do We Need Libraries?” one) — people want to be delighted when they go to the library! And it’s good for librarians to keep this in mind, because people have so many other options when it comes to where to spend their time.

Hello @catladylilia ,
It’s so funny because most of us in this field are introverts, yet most of our positions require us to face and interact with the public regularly. But like you, I do it because of how important libraries and librarians have been to me throughout my life. I was actually watching the Matilda movie the other day and I…[Read more]
