@kylehanson I believe that video games can teach many different skills and are important, and it is so sad that these games can not be openly shared. I really hope the Video Game History Foundation is able to help battle this, so that these games can be played and shared again.
-
@kylehanson thanks for this insightful post about making sure that video games are available. When I was on a speaking tour in Germany, we visited the gaming museum in one of the cities and forgive me. I can’t remember which one where they were actually able to bring up virtual games from arcades in the 80s when I used to play those games. This is the one they showed me:

I was obsessed with that one in 81!

Loved reading your Innovation Strategy & Roadmap. When I visit the Library myself, I am always seeking for the most quiet and private place to relax and study so this would be the perfect space for me to unwind. I work at Disneyland and this also reminds me of the new quiet Cast Member spaces they are creating backstage for the cast to relax and…[Read more]

Great Innovation Strategy & Roadmap! Really enjoyed reading about your plan, and I thought you named solid users that may benefit from being a citizen scientist. Really great examples of other libraries that have successfully implemented citizen science. As a patron of the Newport Beach Public Library myself, it would be neat to see it become a…[Read more]

I enjoyed reading your writing on library participation going into the future. I spent this past Summer in San Francisco and had no idea that I could receive free local museum passes. I focused my Assignment X on the San Francisco California Academy of Sciences museum and how they are pushing the boundaries for museum evolution going into the…[Read more]

@kylehanson I am actually originally from Memphis and had no idea about this – how cool! I also love the cell phone lending program that you mentioned. That is so important in our times now, as everyone has a cell phone and is connected – what a great idea!

@kylehanson I am all about the dogs in the library! Thanks for pulling together all of these stellar examples.

Oh my gosh! These are awesome examples! I love how NYPL offers information literacy courses! Where I work, we offer digital literacy workshops but I never thought that information literacy would be something of interest in a public library. This is giving me so many ideas for my own programming. Thanks for sharing!

@kylehanson It is pretty interesting that many people claim the importance of libraries, yet never step foot inside. Or as you mentioned, how some complain about the lack of books, yet do not even really read or check out books to begin with. I think many people just have this nostalgic idea of what a library is and what they grew up with, and it’s hard to comprehend that they are so much more now. It bothers me so much when I hear people talking about “libraries dying out” – but these same people are the ones that aren’t even using the buildings or services, yet are spreading this terrible information. I think if we as librarians can just reach out more and make our presence more well known (and show all that we do now!), we could help combat these false ideas.

@kylehanson Good idea about talking to your networks first! It coiuyld help formulate the best questions to ask when seeking to improve services and engagement.

Hi Kyle!
Thanks for sharing your experience at the California Academy of Sciences! I love how you mentioned the importance of engaging with locals to uncover hidden gems. I think it is one of the best ways to truly explore and connect with a place. As well, the connection betwen the museum;s design and nature shows just how space can change the experience. It highlights how the its made to help enhance learning and community interaction by really working building those conections. Thank you for sharing these insights as well through the lens of a photographer and an information professional, it brought a new perspective.

Glad you enjoyed learning about it. Salt Lake City has many world class libraries and museums, so I hope you get to visit too!
@kylehanson This library looks so amazing! I’m glad you had some time to explore, and in turn share with us. I particularly love the local artist sticker machine – I have never seen anything like that and it is just too cool. The seed library is also super neat – I love when libraries incorporate gardening.
