  • Thank you, it was a really interesting concept that would be fantastic to bring to any community since it is driven by what the community wants. I think breaking down barriers in this organic way is an excellent method to bring a community closer.

  • The idea to have fee forgiveness is a fine one, because realistically if someone wanted to steal material a fee isn’t going to encourage them to bring it back either. It’s really a hold over from an older generation, but it does help put pressure on some to bring what they borrow back. It should be up to the librarian to make the choice to forgive…[Read more]

    Thank you @francesmorovat so much!

  • @gilbertmaryjoy Thank you! I had fun researching this project and think it’s a great way to help facilitate connections. I also appreciate how understanding you are of my concern, as I am a transwoman myself and don’t want to be put at risked. It’s part of the reason I don’t mention it openly because I don’t want people’s prejudices to color their…[Read more]

  • You raise fair concerns with your reflections, it’s important to be able to grow along side peers and mentors which marganilized groups may have less access to because of busy schedules or just a lack of public support. Although many libraries assist to connect people with proper resources, that depends on the area soemone lives in. I’d wish that…[Read more]

  • I’ve never been the type of person to attend those kinds of events, but I remember when I went to church there was a small quiet area for people with children separated by a glass window. I never realized that can be a safe space for people who can’t handle the big crowds or louder parts of the church. They can still listen in with speakers, but I…[Read more]

Virtual Symposium Hello, this is Olivia Evans. I am presenting my Virtual Symposium for the hyperlinked libraries. First of all we are going to be focusing […]

    • Olivia! This was so good! Great job! I know it is not possible, but wouldn’t it be great if Michael could use this as a link in the course description to help people understand what this class has to offer?
I especially appreciated your interpretation of what library spaces mean to you. “. . .ultimately libraries aren’t just about learning, it’s about becoming a better person.” So very true. Libraries link us all together.

      • @emmizo Thank you, that is fantastic to hear! I really appreciate your feedback, and I had a lot of fun making this I’d honestly be glad to share it with others!

    • Hi Olivia, Wow, I just love this visual symposium. It is amazing to read. Your creative expression in sharing this assignment is inspiring. Thank you for your gift to this course.

  • I agree with your take aways, life long learning is an important part of life. I am always trying to learn, actively by going to school or passively by watching a lot of educational videos on Youtube for example. I have a funny comment though, one of my friends told me before that the quote from Forest Gump is not a good example of a surprise.…[Read more]

  • @michael I am happy you agree, I think people sharing their memories can be a good way to promote libraries as an important institution going forward. It is a way to draw people together, which not many other things can do.

Reflection #5: Infinite Learning Modules I believe this is the best culmination of everything we’ve learned to a degree or at least my take away from everything. The topic of […]

    • I love your statement ” we should stray away from old conventional notions of strict binaries of learning.” It is so true. So many people don’t do well with the ‘traditional’ methods of learning. Yesterday, while on a walk, I saw a teacher with his entire 5th grade class sitting around a creek. They were collecting frog eggs to take back to the class to watch hatch and change into a frog. I watched the class for a few minutes and was impressed on how just changing the setting of the classroom, he got the children super excited about learning.

    • Perhaps one way to look at it is in how we learn things on our own. If I want to casually learn to code, what would I do? Definitely coding games. If I want to learn Photoshop, it’s because I want to edit my personal photos or make things to post online. If I want to learn more about a historical period, I’m probably going to watch a documentary or movie before I pick up a textbook. The library is the perfect place to have the fun extra-curricular learning experiences while also providing the books if that’s how people choose to learn.

    • @oliviaevans yes, to promoting creativity and fun in our library spaces. You summed this up well.

  • I think the library is a valuable part of the modern world since you can learn all sorts of new things and you are right it’s a safe place people can learn what they wouldn’t in school. However I don’t believe we should offload so much of our work towards the library, instead we need to push for schools to be a better educational setting too. It…[Read more]

Inspiration Report: The Power of Stories Objective or Topic: My objective is to connect the Placer community closely, not just by sharing indirect stories of someone’s experience […]

    • Hi, Olivia! What a wonderful post. I especially appreciate the statistics chart you included in your reflections on the success of the Human Library, which really helped me quantify why this project would serve your community as it has for so many others! At the same time, I think your acknowledgement that bringing groups of people that are commonly targets of hatred and discrimination together in one place can be a safety concern. Patrons ought to feel safe and comfortable during an event, and the facilitators should take ever precaution to ensure that, but there is always going to be a risk factor when it comes to potential backlash from prejudiced groups and individuals. That being said, your proposal seems well-thought through and I appreciate the idea of creating a safe, secluded area to mitigate any discomfort for participants, especially due to the vulnerable but unifying nature of storytelling.

      • @gilbertmaryjoy Thank you! I had fun researching this project and think it’s a great way to help facilitate connections. I also appreciate how understanding you are of my concern, as I am a transwoman myself and don’t want to be put at risked. It’s part of the reason I don’t mention it openly because I don’t want people’s prejudices to color their opinions of me.

    • Your idea to start a Human Library in the Placer community is great. It’s a smart way to help people meet and learn from each other’s real-life stories. I like that the program is built on self help and self regulation. This can help everyone feel less alone and more understanding of different lives. I also like the way you thought about the negative outcomes because than you can figure out solutions to avoid them. I’m excited to see how it brings people together. Good job!

      • Thank you, it was a really interesting concept that would be fantastic to bring to any community since it is driven by what the community wants. I think breaking down barriers in this organic way is an excellent method to bring a community closer.

@michael It is really interesting. I wonder where we will go from here. On a personal level I’m not scared of AI becoming a staple in our everyday lives. This will educate citizens on how to eat healthy which is really important and I think it will promote people to grow a garden at home. • @oliviaevans It feels very much like a brave new world in relation to hope fast AI has grown and taken over so much of the tech space in media and in higher ed.

      • @michael It is really interesting. I wonder where we will go from here. On a personal level I’m not scared of AI becoming a staple in our everyday lives. It’s impressive in an intimidating way how advanced it has gotten. I think one day it can become indistinguishable from humans, I just wonder if that will become integrated into our everyday lives or if people are going to try restricting it more as time goes on.

        • @oliviaevans it feels like every day there is a new facet of artificial intelligence that folks are looking at, and suddenly everyone is talking about. I agree with you I don’t know where we will end up with this incredibly world changing technology.

  • This is a great article @gilbertmaryjoy I really enjoy the possibilities digital archiving brings to light! I used to think chatbots were really cool as a kid since it was like someone to talk to, but from a completely different mindset since it’s a program. Obviously libraries would use this more practically to teach people based on knowledge…[Read more]

I’ve been an internet user since I was really little and one thing I learned which I think newer generations forgot is how important it is to remain safe.
