Reflection: Library as Classroom Libraries are already a place of infinite learning. With a little enhancement, libraries can become the community’s classroom. We just […]

Yes to all this! I love that your toddler play group example points out that it is a learning opportunity for the parents as well. They’re also a great way for parents of young children to build community together. Also a big fan of the reading to dogs programs. Do you have one up at your branch?
-
@matilda Not exactly. We have a dog program, but the dog just hangs out while the children listen to an animal themed story. We then do an animal themed craft. We call it Paws and Tales.
-
My kids would have loved that, nevertheless. Dogs have always been very calming for my younger child.

@denise so cool! I like all of your examples. One was shared yesterday at my talking in Illinois: in the children’s room, young people are invited to bring in parts of their collections to display and to share with others. I thought that was so interesting and it feels as though we align with these concepts of learning in the library space.
-
Hello Denise,
I love the different examples of how libraries can be classrooms, and I see that in my public library for teen rooms and on the children’s floor as all sorts of events and activities. To have a space for different age groups, the space becomes their safe haven because they can explore their personalities and find their identity in life.
-
@denise YES! To all of this! I particular resonate with your conclusion: “I can say that the best part of the Library as a classroom is that there is no grading to do. The patrons are there because they want to learn, not just to pass a test. This is where the real learning happens.” It is SO nice to have a learning community where it’s organic and interest-driven instead of catering to any particular standards or requirements. I transitioned from the classroom and into the library partially to escape the minutiae of grading – and also to foster more joy, both for myself and for others. All in all, it was a great decision.

What stands out to me is the amount of community involvement. Since the plan so directly affects them, it is obvious to include them in making decisions. The library I work at recently created a 5 year strategic plan and was on the team of 7 members made up of library employees, friends volunteers, Advisory Board member, and one County…[Read more]

@denise those are some really good tips for strong storytelling in the library setting. I also appreciate your story about the little person and the books… so sweet.

I agree that starting on common ground really helps a relationship build. It is a tactic I use when at a large event with people I don’t know, like a conference. I can be as simple as, “I see you have a Starbucks coffee. Isn’t it great to start the day with a nice cup of coffee.” Then boom, you are sharing stories. Or, in the very least, starting to talk.

@denise, well done! Your presentation was very pleasant to look at and easy to follow with thorough info. I was excited about this prospect after reading through it! I would LOVE to have this availed to my kids. It could even be expanded to an entire STEM facility/children’s space/library.

Hi Denise,
Steam labs are an excellent choice, no doubt. They are programs in which everyone is eager to participate, and they can evolve with time as they don’t feel repetitive. As technology keeps on changing, so does Steam Labs.
Thanks for sharing.

@denise so many interesting things Inc. into this post about the various folks we might be serving in our libraries. I’m going to hone in on the section on teens angle. Thank you offer some good ideas about how you might get more in tune with what’s going on with the young people. Does your library have a teen advisory board– that might be an avenue to explore as well.
Also, just thinking of the top of my head. If you could somehow get a focus group of teams into the library and give them food and ask them what they want that might be super interesting…
