The University of Texas at Arlington Library invites applications from highly motivated, innovative, forward thinking professionals for the position of Librarian (JOBPOST0010908) – Assistant Department Head of User Engagement & Services. Under the direction of the Department Head, this position oversees and coordinates the daily operations of a department charged with creating extraordinary experiences that inspire curiosity, promote collaboration, and transform learning. Leading the department’s user-focused practices, strategic partnerships and innovative risk-taking that cultivate academic and personal success, this position serves as a senior advisor to the Department Head and coordinates the UES Leadership Team. The position interacts extensively with other campus units and library departments on issues related to library services and students’ academic success.

The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to public services coupled with a vision for using emerging technologies and evidence-based decision practices to develop, implement, and assess services.

Purpose

The Assistant Department Head – Librarian assists the Department Head in providing innovative leadership for planning, development, project management, implementation, assessment and support of staff and peer-based user services across library spaces.

Essential Functions

1. Provides oversight and operationalization for a variety of services including: setting hours of operation, in-person and virtual reference/user assistance, circulation services, technology lending, and technology support, K12 instruction and outreach, first-year instruction, and student-focused, social events and programming. Works with the Department Head to oversee personnel, space planning, and policy development, and strategic initiatives. Assists in preparing budget requests, monthly and annual reports and other projects and reports. Develops partnerships and collaborates with other university and library departments in order to create innovative user services within the Libraries’ service areas and Academic Plaza. 2. Supervises the department’s functional units and initiatives including hiring, training, and supervising staff within the department. Fosters a positive working environment and models the Libraries’ values through daily actions and behaviors. 3. Coordinates the department’s continuous improvement which includes ongoing planning and assessment, grant writing, staff leadership development and strategic planning. 4. Serves on library, university, and professional committees. Attends training and professional seminars to maintain and increase knowledge and to keep up with current trends and best practices. Completes other projects and duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited program. • Two years of increasingly responsible experience in management of public services with at least one year in an academic library or college or university setting. • Two years supervisory experience. Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing reference, circulation, and instruction services in an academic library. • Experience with current and emerging technologies and their application in academic libraries, including Springshare products, integrated library systems, ILLiad, and teaching tools. • Experience with partnership development and grant writing. • Experience with formative and summative assessment of library services. • Experience with outreach and marketing services to students and faculty. • Knowledge of reference and bibliographic print resources as well as a variety of online bibliographic and full-text databases. • Experience with needs assessment and program development and the ability to provide leadership in project management. • Knowledge of current learning, teaching and information literacy practices, especially active learning and the development and assessment of student learning outcomes. • Creativity and experience designing instructional/informational materials, both in print and online
