As a fellow wannabe children’s librarian, I appreciated your post. The current library I work for barely has toys out for playing at the library, nonetheless for check out. Glad to here they are prevalent elsewhere, because kids grow so quickly, what. great idea of having a toy library!
Hi Nicole! I don’t think I have ever heard the term “toy library” before! My current public library (and a few others I have worked at in the past) have a “library of things” collection. This collection includes games, children’s toys, dementia kits, and other objects that vary a bit from our traditional materials (books, DVDs, music ect…). This collection, especially the tabletop games, is wildly popular and we are growing our materials budget for it every year. I will say that it is a labor-intensive collection. Most of the objects in the collection require original cataloging, which can be slow and painstaking. The games are also prone to losing pieces or breaking, so we end up doing a lot of audits and repairs of the toys/games in the collection. Still, I think it is so valued by our patrons that it is definitely worth the investment of time and energy.
Hi Nicole,
Great job! I especially appreciate you giving information on the cleaning requirements of toy libraries. In the back of my mind I was have a “OMYGOSH GERMS” freak out moment.
I am also thinking about how this could be an outreach program for libraries. My husband is a pediatrician and often collaborates with outside organizations to give his patients and their parents pertinent information both in medical needs and just life stuff.
