I’m from Boston and the BPL was a huge part of my teen years.
I’m thankful for the librarians there and how they just let me and my weird friends exist. -

I really needed to read your post today- so thank you. You had mentioned the feeling of how time has stopped, and that describes how I’ve been feeling for these past two days.
I work in a high school and while officially I’m supposed to keep politics out of the workplace, I had to have several conversations with students yesterday who felt let…[Read more]

I’ve not heard of that radio program- but that is very cool. I can’t imagine only picking 8 songs to listen to forever, because music carries so much memory with it.
I just looked into that program and found I could listen to it here:
This is just cool and if I can get these students into the playlist idea I will use this program to get them thinking.

Libraries can serve such a vital role in helping to connect refugees with what they need. I love the concept of a library hosting an art exhibit created by a group of refugees…it gives their voice a chance to be heard and allows new connections to be made between different people.

Millicent-
Thank you for the idea! Getting them to make playlists of their own might be a way to get some buy-in from readers! I really struggle with getting students to check out books voluntarily. Maybe if I can get some to help with this it would show that reading is for the cool kids too?

@deniseml I like these ideas. The IFLA link is super interesting. I could see it almost like a AR/VR scavenger hunt in the stacks. Non fiction books could come alive!

Denise,
I love that authors have created playlists to coincide with their books! You could take it even a step further and try to get some students to make their own playlists for some of their favorite books. It would be a chance to let them express themselves through their personal music taste, while also reading and taking part in the library.

@deniseml I like your take on how library is create bridges and the story about the lady in Australia. I am so glad she had access to the chat group through the library. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like to be on the other side of the world during the pandemic.

I’ve had several people ask me the same question when they learn I’m working towards my MLIS- and I wonder what they are thinking. I need a snappy comeback, but I usually just say they aren’t going anywhere.

@deniseml It would be be amazing if my local public library expanded their hours and had something like this, then I would probably use the facilities more. My schedule is so busy with school and two jobs, and sometimes it’s just hard to make it there. It would also be nice to see some of the group activities and workshops provided at later hours, for people like myself. I always want to attend them and find so many of them interesting, but my schedule doesn’t allow me to attend. (Side note: I love the Rupaul pic and reference!)

Denise, I love this idea and our library system has looked at it before. While there certainly is a cost for technology to upgrade one of our branches to allow for this, it certainly is a way to meet the needs of customers at all hours of the day and night. 🙂 It is a great way to be able to offer our services at more hours without the cost of staffing.

@deniseml Sorry for missing this last week!
I am loving the example from mesa, AZ and will add it to the module. I am all about the idea of access to the branch and the video chat option for questions.

Hi Alice-
I grew up in Boston and live on the North Shore now. I miss the city but get to spend time visiting friends who still live there though.I’m a bit jealous that you work for the BPL. I always imagined I would work in one of the branches…but that is most likely not my path.

Hi Denise,
Thanks for sharing. I like your inclusion of vertical farming as a new technology, especially in a school or library. I’ve seen small versions, but it’s interesting to imagine what a large scale version could look like. And certainly beneficial in growing urban areas! Also love the picture of the kitty. 🙂
