I love your assignment X, Frenchie! Technology certainly isn’t going anywhere, and adaptation in libraries – especially school libraries, where there is powerful resistance to cell phone use and other forms of media – is necessary for their survival. That New Yorker cartoon is apt, as they so often are. It reminds me of my own screen-time induced…[Read more]

Hi Elly,
Hello from farther East on the Columbia River – I live in the TriCities, Washington area, Kennewick to be exact. We pass by Hood River often on trips to Portland – a beautiful area! Good luck in class.

@ellyhutch this was super cool. We have so much security set up on our WordPress learning community that it is impossible to embed a video other than a YouTube video. So you did it absolutely right.
I think your experience in the boutique hotel with serve you very well when you move into libraries. Strong customer service and understanding the needs of folks that come through our doors is a valuable skill set in any setting.
Also, this is a safe space to explore and to be curious… Things you said in your video which is super cool. So just take it all in as we go along.
Welcome to #hyperlib!

I’m a huge podcast fan, mostly true crime (Criminal, Bear Brook, Beyond All Reason, the first season of Serial [duh]), but I also really like fiction thriller/horror series, like the White Vault and Tanis. History podcasts are also fun – Behind the Bastards is my favorite.

Hi Elly,
I love this concept too! At the community college library I work at we recently completed a renovation. We used to have stop light signs for the levels of noise allowed in certain areas – red, yellow, and green. After the renovation we did away with those and do not enforce silence anywhere outside of one room that we call a “Silent Student Space”. It really does increase usage and reduce anxiety around being quiet. Students are allowed to collaboratively work, laugh, discuss – and just be themselves.
The BIGGER change we made was food and drink is allowed anywhere – that caused some waves on campus. But we’ve had students order in pizza and fast food and we haven’t had a single spill. It’s been a great culture change. (and sometimes we get leftovers brought to us at the circulation desk)
Thanks for your post!
