I wrote a letter of support for our local library — Elk Rapids District Library — and its potential move to a larger building. Two other letters are a tad more negative.

@michael and everybody,
So, I’ve been using Feedly and I notice that in the “Hyperlinked Library Course Blog & Activity” section of Feedly I see some people’s Assignment Xs but not that many (or my own that I published a couple days ago) even though if I go in through “Sites” on the website I see many more Assignment X posts. Wondering if there is…[Read more] -

Hey everyone! I’m in the midst of Module 5, which includes some writing about serving with love, about being “all-in, all the time” (Garcia-Febo, 2018). I think this is a wonderful concept and attitude to embody as library staff, and I think that it’s one of the essential components of creating and fostering community/hyperlinked community…[Read more]

Hello @maricarmen,
I have a book called The Little Book of Calmness that has a quote I keep in my mind and that I think fits what you are aiming for. Of course, we don’t always have the luxury of being calm or turning away tasks or people, but maybe if we at least have the notion in our heads that, sometimes, it’s OK to say “no”, I think it is…[Read more]-
Mary Ann (don’t know why but I can’t @ you), I appreciate the advice you shared. It’s a good reminder to practice that, to learn our limits about how much we can do/how much we can give. I agree, it is healthy to say “no.” I struggle with deciding what to say “no” to, but with time, I’m sure I’ll get a better handle on that!
-
@maricarmen Not sure why – maybe you put a space between the “mary” and the “ann”? It’s @maryann

@maricarmen and @michael
It’s strange, but if I access this post via Feedly (which is what I did when I first commented) my posts display. But if I go in through the “site wide tab” they don’t.

-
@maricarmen I saw appreciate you posting this. It is super important to do self-care and to take care of yourself out of work. I also went to our lecture on reflective practice, which comes at the end, to make sure that I had said what I always say when I talk about being all in: if you’re all in at work, you have to take care of yourself when…[Read more]

@michael I’m looking forward to that lecture! It’s definitely a challenge to be all in in all spheres of our lives. I appreciate that you’ve included a lecture about this topic in this course.

@maricarmen Topically agree. Thanks.

I was catching up on my local news today when a touching story came up about our canine pals coming to local libraries to help children with reading skills. In the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area, PAL (https://www.peopleanimalslove.org/) and Pets on Wheels (https://www.petsonwheels.org/) offer caring support dogs to assist in our local libraries…[Read more]

Dogs as hyperlinks- I love it! My children love going to the library for read to a dog – our local library had a special day at the park/dog park this summer with all the program dogs so the kids could go around and read to them all. It was a great outreach for kids and pet owners!

@michele This is everything! Yay for dogs being Hyperlinks. Thanks for sharing.

I came across this opinion piece today about how corporate culture is changing in the US. https://dirt.fyi/article/2023/09/corporate-culture
It reminded me of of how The Cluetrain Manifesto argues for a flattening of hierarchies in corporate structures.-
@maricarmen So much in that piece! Here’s one bit that resonated:
Much like television at the moment, there is no monoculture but, rather, mass niche experiences broken out by industry.

Casefile True Crime Podcast. I know this may not be the most original topic but…the narrator for this one is really great (IMHO). The host is an anonymous Australian man and his reading of the stories, as well as the behind-the-scenes research, is clear and logical. Every time I think there’s a lose end it inevitably gets tied up. Great for…[Read more]

@maryann Thanks for this…sounds good. I listened to MFM like mad but then got burnt out a bit.

Thanks for sharing- have to check out MFM (I had to google it). Seems fun that people can call in with their own stories and also that there’s a humorous slant to it. Casefiles is definitely not comedy!

Hi Friends! I’m working with my high school students to create mental health awareness activities in the library at lunch once a week. If you could talk to your high school self, what piece of mental health advice would you give your younger self?
-
@biblobrowsing Hi Lynn, I think that’s a great question. I would advise my high school self to have some courage and try the things I wanted to do back then. I remember wanting to do more writing and pick hiking back up. I think those activities would’ve had a great impact on my mental health. I would have also encouraged myself to be less self…[Read more]
-
Mari, I think that is wonderful advice! Sometimes our students are nervous to break out of the mold they created or someone else created for themselves, but trying new things is helpful for learning about yourself and provide new creative or mental health outlets.
-
-
@biblobrowsing This is amazing. I think one thing I would say is try not to worry so much about what other people are thinking about me. Be yourself! (now that I am in my late 50s… I am over what other people think!)
-
Sound advice, but sometimes so very hard to do… looking at you, Introduction Discussion Board Posts! I’ve found as I get older, that practicing accepting myself as I am in all my messy variations helps me with not worrying as much about what others (and their unseen messy variations) think of me. If you have any ideas of activities that can…[Read more]

@biblobrowsing Activities…. kitchen dance parties with your favorite music are fun. Also – I have found it feels good to speak up a bit more when I used to be quiet. Maybe that comes with age too. Also expressing feelings out loud. If I am feeling something sure as heck my friends and family probably have too.

Great topic and one I may share with my own teenagers. I would say be true to yourself and pursue your interests (even if not typical) and trust your own opinions and ideas. I can remember many times in high school and even college I would think of a comment or question in class and talk myself out of voicing it, thinking it was too obvious or not…[Read more]
-
Mary Ann, your response really made me think that perhaps I need to flip this question around and have the students let us know what is challenging for them. This could be a really interesting discussion if we have staff giving advice to their younger selves and our students anonymously voice their concerns about growing up all in the same space.

@biblobrowsing
I think that’s a great idea Lynn!

Ask A Question! 4 weeks ago
@michael, after reviewing the Zoom session from this past Sunday, I had a question regarding assignments and blog submissions. Do we submit our assignments and blog URLs through Canvas? Are they submitted through WordPress somewhere? I was a little confused about how/where this would be done.
-
@geannamhp No worries. There is a lot going on with our WP site. There is a bit on each assignment page that states you submit the URL for your published assignment on your blog to Canvas. For example:
Posting and Submission
Share your Innovation Strategy and Roadmap via a post on your blog. In that post, introduce the Roadmap with a few…[Read more]

Hi, friends-to-be! Is anyone else enjoying a trip down memory lane reading Library 2.0? I’m suddenly missing the days of Xanga and AOL Instant Messenger. It’s also really interesting to think about ways librarians were using technology to connect with their communities in new ways. Technology has evolved, but so many of the core components that…[Read more]

Yes! You’re right Naomi. I need to update my MySpace profile :).
I found the Michael Buckland readings the most interesting in this regard. In fact, I took a detour and read his iconic Information as Thing paper, all the time framing this 1990s perspective with the present. Wow! Consider today’s Hathi Trust. Amazing. It looks like…[Read more]

@naomimcd I think the basic tenets of the Library 2.0 book are so sound and useful today! I often ask Michael to do a revised edition…. hopefully someday!
-
@michael A revised edition would be fantastic. I would love to hear updated thoughts on how libraries are utilizing Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms to reach patrons. As @aarontassin said above, framing the older perspective with the present was really fascinating. It got me brainstorming ideas for implementing Library 2.0 more into my own work.

@naomimcd Michael will be with us later in September. Your question about newer tech would be a fun one.

@naomimcd, I agree! I also feel a bit dated, haha. 2008 seems like just yesterday, but I forget HOW much things have changed and evolved.
