@oliviaevans those are good memories from your reading that took place in the library. I agree, encouraging everyone to enjoy stories and to come together around stories can be so beneficial.
-
@michael I am happy you agree, I think people sharing their memories can be a good way to promote libraries as an important institution going forward. It is a way to draw people together, which not many other things can do.

@savannahpolizzi So good! and ✔✔✔ ❤️.
I so appreciate the picture you paint of the library as a story telling space in every possible way that that could take place: storytime, the human library, and anything else in between.

Yes to all this! I love that your toddler play group example points out that it is a learning opportunity for the parents as well. They’re also a great way for parents of young children to build community together. Also a big fan of the reading to dogs programs. Do you have one up at your branch?
-
@matilda Not exactly. We have a dog program, but the dog just hangs out while the children listen to an animal themed story. We then do an animal themed craft. We call it Paws and Tales.
-
My kids would have loved that, nevertheless. Dogs have always been very calming for my younger child.

-
@denise so cool! I like all of your examples. One was shared yesterday at my talking in Illinois: in the children’s room, young people are invited to bring in parts of their collections to display and to share with others. I thought that was so interesting and it feels as though we align with these concepts of learning in the library space.

-
I think the library is a valuable part of the modern world since you can learn all sorts of new things and you are right it’s a safe place people can learn what they wouldn’t in school. However I don’t believe we should offload so much of our work towards the library, instead we need to push for schools to be a better educational setting too. It shouldn’t always be at risk to lose creative learning environments. Play is an important part of learning as you say, so it needs to remain in schools to a certain degree. I’ve never learned that well if I didn’t have fun, but this comes in many different ways. I just don’t think we should give up on schools having fun.
-
@jeanna so much goodness here, but I’m gonna focus in on the last little bit about library services under one roof. My thought would be to expand the library into that storefront and anywhere else. The library might find some space such as the farmers market or the community center or anything in between. This is a good way to think about service and the library’s place in the community.

@laurele this is a wonderful story about your connections to Half Moon Bay. I did that exercise yesterday with the library staff in Illinois and was very interesting when we debriefed: Most of the people said they imagine themselves outside or in nature. Most that shared said they were alone as well. Interesting.

@gilbertmaryjoy OH! The recordings you shared are amazing. Thank you. On a personal note my family on both mom and dad side came from Eastern Kentucky and hearing the voices in your recordings reminded me so much of my family. That accent is just so special to me. My mom had 11 sisters and one brother and they all called their parents “mommy and daddy.” I loved that.

-
Jeanna,
I just perused your inspiration report. You did such a great job! Thank you for providing us all with a great example. I appreciated how well thought out your plan was, even down to factoring in liability issues and providing solutions.
I really appreciated this sentiment, “As computers and cell phones
make much of the library’s historical purpose obsolete, we can ensure our
continued relevance by providing opportunities that other organizations cannot.” I think this is exactly what this course is all about–in order for public libraries to survive, they must evolve, adapt, and be linked with the community.
Good job! I enjoyed reading this.

Wow — thank you so much! I really struggled with the graphic presentation but after a couple false starts, I finally found something that worked. Good luck with yours!

Roya,
I loved this! You always seem to bring the reader back to the big picture of this shared human experience and the need for understanding and compassion. Thank you for the book recommendation, “Far from the Tree.” When I have more time to do reading outside of the program, I will take a look. I am also going to pass it on to a parent at work who shares his struggles with me regarding helping his transgender child with learning challenges.
Lovely post. I always make sure to stop and read what you have added to the discussion. -
@royaflin It is amazing how making a connection to someone who is going through something difficult can make it easier. Knowing that you’re not alone and someone has a similar story to yours can be lifew changing.
I can especially empathize when it comes to our children. My son has had multiple medical issues in his life, and when I was first learning about them, I always felt better meeting someone who went through a similar experience. I now have been the parent to pass along my (and my son’s) story to others. I love when I can help someone else with what I learned during my struggles. If I can make things a little easier for someone else, that makes everything worth wild!
-Laurel

Thanks for taking the time to share your story. I think most can empathize with or identify with such struggles with Family members or friends.

@royaflin Thnak you for such an honest and thoughtful exploration of your story as a aprent and how it all relates to the big picture. The nbook you suggested sounds amazing and so useful for understanding others’ stories.

Hi Emily!
Sorry for my late reply to your kind and thoughtful post. I guess I really took a break over Spring Break! I love your ideas for additional incentives for kids to come into the library at lunchtime — especially the idea for them to have control of a display. They would love that! And thanks for the video of the eSports at the Cleveland Public Library. I really like the wrap-up where he talks about the community building aspect of the program. It’s clear from the video footage that they have created a thriving community of gamers really enjoying their library. So much positive human interaction present there! And it’s funny that you ask when I eat my lunch…it’s always a struggle and I hate to close the library any time during the school day so I end up eating at the circulation desk AFTER the two lunches are over. I usually get interrupted but no one seems to mind that there’s a plate of food on my desk!
-
@maggierogers both of your ideas are good ones. I think having one day a week when students could have lunch would be so interesting to try and it might be a very valuable experience to see if something like that could work more than one day a week. Please keep us informed if you try it.
-
Thanks @michael. I’ll keep you posted!
