@oliviaevans those are good memories from your reading that took place in the library. I agree, encouraging everyone to enjoy stories and to come together around stories can be so beneficial.

@maggierogers both of your ideas are good ones. I think having one day a week when students could have lunch would be so interesting to try and it might be a very valuable experience to see if something like that could work more than one day a week. Please keep us informed if you try it.

@gilbertmaryjoy OH! The recordings you shared are amazing. Thank you. On a personal note my family on both mom and dad side came from Eastern Kentucky and hearing the voices in your recordings reminded me so much of my family. That accent is just so special to me. My mom had 11 sisters and one brother and they all called their parents “mommy and…[Read more]

@gilbertmaryjoy thank you for this reflection on the teen creation space at the San Jose Public Library. It is such a good example of how to do something like this so well. Smith’s TedTalk really resonated with me as well. I have been lucky to work with her at conferences before her retirement.

@laurele this is a wonderful story about your connections to Half Moon Bay. I did that exercise yesterday with the library staff in Illinois and was very interesting when we debriefed: Most of the people said they imagine themselves outside or in nature. Most that shared said they were alone as well. Interesting.

@jeanna so much goodness here, but I’m gonna focus in on the last little bit about library services under one roof. My thought would be to expand the library into that storefront and anywhere else. The library might find some space such as the farmers market or the community center or anything in between. This is a good way to think about service…[Read more]

@denise those are some really good tips for strong storytelling in the library setting. I also appreciate your story about the little person and the books… so sweet.

@denise so cool! I like all of your examples. One was shared yesterday at my talking in Illinois: in the children’s room, young people are invited to bring in parts of their collections to display and to share with others. I thought that was so interesting and it feels as though we align with these concepts of learning in the library space.

@christines thank you so much for sharing this story. Kylie Carlson’s presentation at Library 2.0 and at Next Library in 2019 was so moving. Yours was a s well.

This is so fun to fantasize about! Living and working in Australia–the episode of “House Hunters International” just writes itself. I really appreciate how the posting opens up with a Land Acknowledgement of the Indigenous people to the area.
-
@lauraw Yes – House Hunters International FTW. It’s a very different process to buy a house I have heard…bidding and such.
The Australian folks and New Zealanders have made the Land Acknowledgement of the Indigenous an ingrained event in everything. It is always so well done. When I was in New Zealand, they actually sang and Maori song to the conference.

@oliviaevans it feels like every day there is a new facet of artificial intelligence that folks are looking at, and suddenly everyone is talking about. I agree with you I don’t know where we will end up with this incredibly world changing technology.

@Michael, hope you find relief soon in whichever way works for you. I love yoga (just took a class this morning!) and love that it is such meditative and holistic practice for the mind and body.
Also I’ve been finding it hard to regain momentum after Spring Break 🥴.
@lauraw Yoga and a series of stretches is helping…as is being mindful of the million times I day I bend forward to mess with the boys or load the dishwasher.
I too have some issues with momentum…especially as the weather improves up here.
