Greetings everyone. I think I’ve mentioned that I am on the local library board. Last night we just signed the construction contract for renovating an old factory into an amazing new library. This move was covered by our local weekly paper here in the Traverse City area.
If you are interested, please take a look.
The included image is a rendering of what the new building will look like.

Congratulations! How exciting. I’m intrigued by the idea of a full service kitchen—how clever. Of course, after reading the article, I had to look up Katharine Dexter McCormick—what an amazing woman and story! I had no idea. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/pill-katharine-dexter-mccormick-1875-1967/
@lauraskor the planning for the community room. Space has been so interesting to me. The library director wants the space to be used as much as possible so we’re looking at during the day If there aren’t meetings scheduled, it would become a coworker space like people could come to the library and work for the day. I love that idea. The full kitchen might be used for programming. It might be used during the day for people to make coffee or whatever.
Sounds as though proximity to schools was also a consideration with the new site. Love that services will be expanded for younger patrons.
Laura – Thanks for the PBS link; what an interesting read!
@iris yes the proximity to the schools was so important. There’s also going to be extended sidewalks that will make it even easier to get from the schools to the library and back to the schools.
Congratulations on the new building! What an exciting transition.
And as a side note, my mom grew up in East Jordan, not too far from you. I loved visiting my grandparents and the rest of the extended family every year, especially in the winter!
@jenfredrick thanks! East Jordan is just up the road a bit! That is very cool. You got to visit your grandparents up here. I hope the winters were super fun.
