This really resonates with me too:
I used to tell my friends that when you meet new people, being able to try to find common ground for both parties is always the best way to talk, and all these things will create stories in everyone’s lives.
I would say we might find that common ground by sharing stories – or we might appreciate and v…[Read more]

@lauraw Oh! So nice to be reminded of this regarding visits to physical museums:
“…gains in critical thinking, historical empathy, tolerance and interest in visiting museums again,”
I am in line with McShane – VR field trips certainly have a place but I hope young people have a chance to visit as many museums as they can via school, f…[Read more]

@kmg333 That Konigsberg quote is powerful. I was just listening to a podcast with an author who said how important it was for everyone’s story to be told. The author emphasize that stories can have a huge impact on others who might be experiencing the same thing.

@jeanna Oh my! I need to know more about the emoji language the 20 somethings have… I am way out of there loop as a late-50’s something!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the human library. I do believe there is some training involved in the formalized human library programs for the “library books” to be aware of how people might talk to them.

@denise I appreciate your vision for all the programming and services a library might provide via new models of service. I am 100% on board for a wholistic approach!

I'd like to thank the library worker @RichmondLibs who treated my dad with such kindness and compassion when he was returning my mother's books after she passed away. You made a painful event more human and manageable for him. It meant the world.

@michael. Your discussion of emojis in this week’s lecture reminded me of a conversation that I had with a friend. We were talking about how the persian language is so difficult to learn for non-speakers because it is filled with so many unique idioms, and expressions. Persians often quote lines of poetry when discussing a certain story to highlight the significance of a story or situation. We joked about making a persian set of emojis for all the different idioms to be used in conversations with our relatives in Iran. Thought I’d share!

This program is fantastic! And it was expanded last year to include hiking backpacks that you can check out too. They contain binoculars, nature guides, a compass, and a local parks map.

Yes!! My library, the Santa Cruz Public Library, has Parks Passes you can check out (2 weeks) and a “Discovery” kit that is exactly what you describe, Maggie. In fact, I just checked in both yesterday. So fantastic! Also, I just learned that our library also has a program called “Get Up and GO” that allows library card holders free entrance into several different museums/cultural institutions around the Bay Area. Plus, there’s “Shelf to Shore” passes that allow a family of 5 free entrance into the Monterey Bay Aquarium for the year. Whew!

Things are a little chaotic recently for me, but overall I am doing okay
@kmg333, hope things settle down soon and you can enjoy “Spring Break” : )
@Michael, thank you for your thoughtful post. There are no shortage of things to worry about/do/hamster wheel over. I just checked out this book called “The Worry(less) Book: Feel Strong, Find Calm and Tame Your Anxiety,” by Rachel Brian. It’s a kids graphic novel and my daughter and I were just reading the tactics for your “anxiety tool box” and practicing them together. One was ‘square breathing,’ ‘grounding your body’ (5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 smells, 1 taste), and keeping a worry journal, etc. I LOVE it!!
