Hi everyone!
Welcome to Once Upon a Hyperlinked Library, my blog site for INFO 287: The Hyperlinked Library. My name is Caitlin Vaille, and I currently live in sunny San Diego, CA with my partner and our two beloved kitties, Kiwi and Coconut.
I’ll shout it from the rooftops—I love public libraries! Currently, I work as a Library Assistant at the Coronado Public Library and as a substitute teacher in elementary schools. I got the chance to watch some of Dr. Stephens’s lecture videos while taking INFO 200, and I was inspired by his enthusiasm for the collaborative nature of libraries and the reminder to look outwards and abroad for insights into how we can improve and adapt our services.
I just returned home from a wonderful adventure in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. I was able to explore several libraries on this trip, and I was blown away by their creativity and attention to detail. We truly stand to learn so much just from looking at the examples set by other libraries in how they accommodate the unique needs of their users.
I’m looking forward to learning from all of my brilliant classmates and Dr. Stephens over the course of this semester. Thanks for tuning in to this introduction!
@cvaille this is so cool. I appreciate the photos from your travels. And I am all about library tourism. Well done. I also appreciate your kind words about my info 200 lectures. It makes me very happy that so many students get to see my thoughts early on in the program.

I love public libraries too!
My fiancé is from San Diego. He lives in Texas now, but we are considering moving back if the opportunity presents itself. He has nothing but great things to say about the Coronado Public Library.
Have you decided whether you are leaning towards public or school librarianship? Do you like being a substitute teacher? I considered being a school librarian because I love working with children, but I have never worked at a school.
What a fun way to learn about libraries internationally! I haven’t been to these places, but I have researched their libraries for other assignments, and I agree that we have much to learn here in the States.

I do really enjoy substitute teaching and working with children, but I’m set on working in public libraries! I was initially somewhat interested in working in a school library, which is what led me to try out substitute teaching. I just love public libraries as community spaces for connection and the opportunity to work with everybody, not just children. Both school and public libraries are awesome in their own ways though!
