“Hi, I’m Weird Barbie. I am in the splits. I have a funky haircut and I smell like basement.”

Hi everyone! My name is Abbie, and I’m from Alabama. This summer session is my second semester in the program at SJSU.

For fun, I love to go thrifting, play board games, read, go to the gym, watch movies and go to the movie theater (if you can’t tell from my title haha). I really resonate with Weird Barbie, I love to have funky hair (currently have red with hot pink money pieces), funky clothes, and I have felt like an outcast many times because I am very introverted… never been able to do the splits though. I would love to hear about everyone else’s favorite movies or movie quotes if you have any!

Anyway, I think that is why I have been drawn to library work–I have always felt welcome in the library despite feeling like an outcast in other situations because the library is for everyone.

I initially started the program here because I was interested in building a career in cataloguing or archival work, something involving behind-the-scenes library work. However, I’ve been working as a circulation desk library assistant at my local library for a year now, and I love interacting with the patrons everyday so I’m considering a pivot to keeping a more public facing position after graduating.

Looking forward to meeting everyone through our blog posts!

This is a picture of me before our Halloween program last October.

  1. Hello Abbie!

Great intro post! I currently work in the entertainment industry, so I also love movies. My favorite is The Wizard of Oz, and my favorite line is, “There’s no place like home!”

I love the sentiment of being drawn to the library because it’s a place for everyone. As a future librarian, I hope to contribute to that by helping create and maintain an environment where everyone feels welcome.

Best of luck in the course!

  2. @abbietxo I think public service is a great choice – especially after “back of the house” staffing models continue to evolve. Thank for sharing your interests. I am all about the movies! Welcome to #hyperlib!

  3. One of my favorite movies is Bring It On which includes an incredible amount of quotable lines. It’s iconic intro is in my opinion one of the best movie intros ever.
Our library paths are a little similar I orginally joined the library world thinking I wanted to work on patron programs. However, I hired into the circulation desk. At my library circulation is coupled with cataloguing duties. I am in my first library job and am told this model is not common amoung libraries. Though it seems to be extra work by most accounts I am really enjoying the learning opportunity.

    • Hi Krystal! Bring It On is such a good movie. I love an early 2000’s rom com.

That’s great that your position involves cataloguing too since you were initially interested in more “back of house” positions.
