Introducing myself!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Tyla Brown. I’m from Oakland, and I currently work in Public Affairs at a renewable energy company, managing our community engagement strategy. I hope to work in a museum post-graduation. I am passionate about creating experiences for people, particularly in the arts and culture. I have some experience in UX design, so I am very interested in diving into participatory spaces and learning how to bring people together.

My blog is named after Modal Soul, an album from one of my favorite Japanese musicians, Nujabes. My daughter and I are planning a trip to Japan in the Spring (she’s obsessed with all things Anime, and I’m obsessed with matcha).

Here’s a drawing from my daughter!

  1. Hi @tylabrown, nice to meet you! Great blog name. I love the inspo behind it. My family traveled to Japan last summer. It was incredible and I plan to go back in the next five years. If you’re headed to Kyoto, check out the Kyoto International Manga Museum. It has incredible exhibitions and over 50,000 books of manga, plus a sweet gift shop. There’s good matcha everywhere! I look forward to following your blog. Have a fab semester. B.

  2. Hey Tyla!
Nice to meet you. Working in Public Affairs sounds like it ties in perfectly with what you want to do in museums and as well as having some experience in community engagement. I think having a UX design background will be a nice touch to the resume on top of your great experience. Also I love that your blog is inspired by Nujabes!! I recently went to Japan this year and went to his brother’s ramen shop called “ Usagi” and there his brother plays Nujabes music. I recommend it. I hope your Japan trip with your daughter will be amazing, perfect for anime and matcha lovers. And her drawing is adorable, thanks for sharing!

  3. @tylabrown your daughter’s drawing is lovely. Thank you for sharing it. I’m very excited about your trip to Japan. It is on my list for sure and I think it’s super cool that you have yours planned!
