Reflection on Hyperlinked Communities

Here is a short video I made which reflects on Hyperlinked Communities.

Nota bene: in the video I mistakenly call Rirkrit Tiravanija a Thai-American artist. In fact, he was born in Buenos Aires and raised in Thailand, Ethiopia, and Canada. He went to art school in Chicago.

  1. @arthurkolat So enjoyed this while I had my tea this morning. I appreciate where you took the idea of sharing food as a means to connect. The salad example is amazing.

The bowls are from IKEA … an old set we had on hand for years. Soup night IMHO requires a fresh different bow for each soup!

  2. @arthurkolat Great video! I love the idea the framing participatory library services as a kind of conceptual art piece. It really highlights how services can be rooted in a sense of playful experimentation, rather than the more traditional focus on their “impact”. I’ll have to look into Rirkrit Tiravanija’s work. He sounds very interesting. I also had the pleasure of seeing Alison Knowles “Make A Salad” in person, pre-pandemic, at the Walt Disney Music Hall during a small Fluxus festival they put on. It was a lot of fun. Aside from the fun of watching the making of a huge salad as a public performance and the shared meal, I remember the smells adding a very interesting element to the whole experience. It made the whole thing feel intimate in a way I wasn’t expecting.

    1. @louis Thanks for your comment. I’m sorry I missed Make a Salad at the Disney Hall. I didn’t even think of how the whole performance must smell! That definitely adds a dimension that is not captured in the videos. BTW, I actually go the the Disney quite often because I subscribe to their Green Umbrella series (new music). Maybe we’ll run into each other at a performance!
