Spoiler Alert: It’s Me

An ordinary extraordinary day!

7:00 AM β€” The Sidekick Appears

If I’m lucky I’m able to get the bed made before Minnie, my 15-year-old toy poodle, is asking for breakfast. If I’m home she’s never more than a few feet away, and she may get her MLIS before I do – she listens to every class video!

Β 11:00 AM β€” My Happy Place(s)

If I have my towel, and have managed to escape a bout of Vogon poetry, and it’s a week day I end up in my office – one of my happy places! If it’s the weekend then I’m venturing deep into the most amazing forests or parklands I can get to in the time allotted.

This is a secret lake I love, where I sit and watch green herons, swans, and listen to the loons call to each other.

πŸ’¬ 2:00 PM β€” What I Do (and Why)

As someone with a lifelong passion (some might say obsession) for learning things, working in a library to help others have the same experience is very satisfying. If I spend the rest of my life helping the world access libraries I will consider it a life well-lived.

🎡 6:00 PM β€” The Soundtrack

In the evening it’s family project time: messing with the YouTube algorithm. We use a stream-of-consciousness approach for music, clips, and weird British offerings. It’s always our goal to try and reach the point where the suggestions area is blank!

πŸŒ™ 9:00 PM β€” Looking Ahead

While you may not find a lot of personal social media work of mine online there’s a good reason for it! I spend all day on the computer at work so I really try and unplug in my free time. I weave, paint, hike, and recharge to bring my best back to the library.

Welcome to my blog! Come in, stay a while, bring coffee if you like – because I only have tea. (Fun fact: I’ve never had a cup of coffee!)

Hi Heather! It’s so nice to meet you! I like the format of your post in the form of A-Day-In-The-Life. It catches your attention! I cannot believe that you have never had a cup of coffee. I am the biggest coffee drinker, but only iced coffee. What do you like to paint?

    • Heather B

LOL – I do love the smell of coffee if that counts for anything. Maybe I would like iced coffee?!

I mostly paint places I’ve visited. This summer I’ve been working on some of the beautiful barns around my house, but over the winter I was painting lots of Utah landscapes (we hiked all its national parks last October).

Your paintings sound beautiful! Also, what an accomplishment to have hiked all of Utah’s national parks. Utah and its national parks are on my bucket list to visit one day!

    Hi Heather,
I really like the way your introductory post is structured. It is very unique and engaging. Also, hiking is one of my favorite hobbies as well. I usually go to the Malibu Creek Park as it has a variety of trails which are perfect for both amateur and professional hikers!

    • Heather B

Hi Camillia! Malibu Creek Park sounds lovely. We did the drive down the CA coast a few years ago, through the Big Sur. I really want to go back again sometime and spend more time hiking. Nice to meet you!

@heatherb this is super fun. I so appreciate the day in the life format. And how sweet is Minnie!

Here’s a little snippet of my morning: up very early with Billy and Sam probably around 5 AM. I put on a headlamp and take them outside for their morning break. They have their breakfast and I make a pot of lovely rather strong English breakfast tea. I’ve never really had a whole cup of coffee either.

It seems in the early mornings I can get a lot of stuff done like commenting on blogs and grading, portfolio, entries, etc.

    Welcome to the hyperlinked library!

English Breakfast is really good. I keep some around for when the Earl Grey isn’t strong enough! LOL

    Hi Heather!
I noticed you said you weave– that is SO cool! How did you get into that hobby? I think anything fiber arts is so amazing and takes so much talent.

    • Heather B

I did it for an art class ages ago and it’s just so relaxing for me that I was called back to it. I bought a small 18″ loom and I really love it. My marketing mentor had a theory that as people create more work that is invisible the more they will need to find an outlet to create tangible things. He said it’s a basic human need. I think it’s true!

      • Krista Holmquist

That is such a great point! Having a creative outlet can be *so* healing.
