All About Me
All About Me
My name is Vinothiny Kumaradevan. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with my husband and our 5‑year‑old daughter. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. I have been employed with the Toronto Public Library for 17 years, beginning as a Page and moving through roles including Public Service Assistant and Payroll/Accounting Clerk. I now work as a Library Assistant. I’m completing my MLIS while working full‑time, with the goal of becoming a Children’s Librarian.
My Library Story
I was born in the midst of a civil war. Fortunately, we were able to escape its violence three decades ago and immigrate to Canada. When we settled in a neighbourhood well known for housing newcomers and supporting low-income families, the local public library quickly became one of the first places my family frequently visited and felt a sense of inclusion and belonging. That sense of belonging stayed with me and ultimately shaped my path into librarianship.
Why I Chose INFO 287
I chose The Hyperlinked Library for several reasons that align closely with my MLIS journey and my work in public libraries. First, the course was highly recommended by past alumni, many of whom described it as one of the most inspiring classes in the program. I’m also excited that my sister and I get to take this course together. We’ve been supporting each other throughout the MLIS program, and sharing this learning experience feels especially motivating. From a professional standpoint, I’m eager to explore how emerging technologies can enhance library experiences.
My Interests in the LIS World
My main interest is public librarianship, especially the ways public libraries support families, children, and diverse communities. I’m also drawn to digital literacy support for adults and seniors, and to exploring how emerging technologies can strengthen and expand public library services.
Fun Facts
- Since 2005, my four high school friends and I have been creating a 5‑year time capsule. Every five years, we write about our current lives, our goals for the next five years, then revisit and reflect before creating a new one. I’ve written “become a librarian” in every capsule since 2015, and I’m hoping the 2030 capsule is finally my celebration year.
- I enjoy competing in 10K runs and hope to complete a marathon someday.
- Cleaning and reorganizing my home is my favorite way to de‑stress.
- I also started my very first day at the Toronto Public Library on April Fools’ Day, which felt like the universe testing me, but thankfully it turned out not to be a prank.

Hi Vinothiny!
I also have my BA in sociology and am interested in public librarianship. I also think that it’s super cool that you and your sister are doing the MLIS program together and get to take classes together. As someone who does not know anyone personally that is also in this program, I’m sure it is so nice to have someone who truly understands. I hope you have a great summer semester!

Hi Victoria!
Thank you. Having my sister in the program has been a great support system. We help keep each other accountable and on top of assignments. Wishing you a wonderful semester!

@vino I really appreciated learning about your background and your interests in LIS. I would say you could focus all of your assignments on those interests for this semester if you would like. Also, I believe this is the first time I’ve ever had two sisters in class. This is incredibly cool. I’ll tag @nimalinybk here too!
Welcome to the hyperlinked library.

Hi Michael,
Yes, I am excited to explore topics related to public librarianship throughout the semester. My sister and I actually both work for Toronto Public Library and we share similar career goals, so it’s been wonderful to have someone who understands the journey and can help keep each other on track with assignments. We’re excited to be part of the Hyperlinked Library community!
