Our ways of gathering information and learning are rapidly changing as exemplified in our use of the internet, social media, and now Generative AI. With that, our libraries are recognizing the changes in our information seeking and learning behaviors, and are also evolving beyond their traditional roles as a repository of books and information. Rather, libraries are becoming more dynamic hubs of, not just learning, but of joy. This approach has brought in more creativity and more community engagement.
Community Learning and Joy
@michael noted, libraries are not just “book warehouses,” but rather they are vibrant spaces where people can “find their passion, their voice, and their way.” The libraries are The Peoples’ University. And I love that. This continues to stick with me because that is what I’ve based my entire career on. This is why I want to become a librarian.
I’ve found that libraries are the safe and brave spaces for all of us especially for our most marginalized communities like our houseless community and system involved youth. I am passionate about sharing knowledge and information because that is what helps people thrive. I say all of this to say: libraries and the people who work in them must be protected.
True Third Space
I’m a firm believer that libraries are one of the last real third spaces where people are not asked to buy anything. Rather, libraries are spaces to learn, gain information, borrow media, to be unbothered, to engage with community.

Hi, I enjoyed reading your post about infinite learning in the library. I think that your inclusion of the idea that libraries are “third spaces” was an excellent inclusion to highlight the true power libraries have over patron’s relationship with learning. Libraries are definitely a more open and accepting space for people to interact with learning materials without the prospect of judgement or failure like their might be in a classroom setting. This was a great post to read!
