Module 11 of our course, The Hyperlinked Library, explores “Infinite Learning,” emphasizing the sub-module concept that learning happens everywhere—across physical spaces, digital networks, and informal daily interactions (Stephens, 2026). At the core of this framework lies Douglas Thomas and John Seely Brown’s (2011) seminal work, A New Culture of Learning: Cultivating the Imagination for a World of Constant Change, which offers a vital lens through which modern libraries can reframe their educational mission.

Rethinking Education for a World of Constant Change

Thomas and Brown (2011) argue that traditional educational models, which focus on transferring fixed sets of information from teacher to student, are increasingly obsolete in a dynamic digital age. The famous proverb about “teaching a person to fish” falls short when the lake, the tools, and the fish themselves are continuously evolving. Instead, Thomas and Brown advocate for a “new culture of learning” driven by two interconnected components: a bounded, supportive environment and an open information network where play, discovery, and imagination thrive.

Within this framework, learning is not viewed as a task to be completed, but as an ongoing, play-based process of tinkering, failing, and adapting. Rather than relying solely on structured instruction, individuals learn through peer-to-peer engagement, trial and error, and self-directed exploration within flexible boundaries.

The Library as a Playfield for Infinite Learning

When applied to information organizations, Thomas and Brown’s concepts illustrate why public and academic libraries are uniquely positioned to foster lifelong growth. Libraries provide the ideal “bounded environment”—a safe, inclusive, and resourced space—within an expansive network of global information.

By embracing the philosophy of “learning everywhere,” libraries are expanding beyond passive consumption toward active, participatory experiences (Stephens, 2016):

Play-Based and Experiential Programs: From coding workshops and game nights to community garden projects and “Adulting 101” life-skill classes, libraries create low-stakes environments where patrons can experiment, play, and learn without the fear of grades or rigid performance metrics.

Flexible, Interactive Spaces: Makerspaces, digital media labs, and sensory rooms allow users of all ages to engage in hands-on creation and multi-sensory learning, demonstrating that knowledge acquisition takes many forms.

Peer-to-Peer Knowledge Sharing: Libraries serve as community hubs where patrons learn not only from library staff but also from one another, sharing specialized skills, lived experiences, and creative passions.

Conclusion: Embracing the Horizon of Infinite Learning

As Thomas and Brown (2011) remind us, cultivating imagination is just as critical as mastering facts. By adopting the principles of “Infinite Learning,” libraries move beyond functioning merely as warehouses for books to become dynamic engines of curiosity, connection, and resilience. Meeting community members wherever they are on their learning journeys ensures that libraries remain essential sanctuaries where individuals learn how to adapt, grow, and thrive in an ever-changing world.

References

Stephens, M.
