Director’s Brief: Starting a Library Food Pantry

My Director’s Brief examines the concept of having food pantries inside public libraries. Food pantries are becoming more common in academic libraries and college campuses throughout the U.S. and could easily be adopted by public libraries as well.

I love this idea, and haven’t heard of it before! They can be placed right next to people’s LFLs and extend the library services into neighborhoods. Great Director’s brief!

@svigil287 A food pantry is an amazing idea. So many people would benefit from it, and it would get more people into the library or get them to see the library as a community resource and not just as a book archive. I wonder if pairing with any of the local shelters would help with the need for volunteers or food drives for the pantry. It could also help bridge two very important community resources! Thank you so much for sharing, I loved your brief!

@britstrike Thank you for your comment! Partnering with local shelters sounds like a great idea. We have a partnership with our local food bank who could help out with food drives. Partnerships are a win-win situation for everyone!
