Hi! I work full-time as the marketing manager for the Traverse Area District Library. When I'm not at the library you can usually find me painting, weaving, or hiking (as deep into the wilderness as I can get in the time I have!).

Assignment X: Disrupting the Library Strategic Planning Process

We don’t often hear the library world talk about being disrupters. It’s the antithesis of the order and structure we crave to bring to all manner of things. However, we can’t allow this part of ourselves to work against us!

In response to Assignment X, and as I try to formulate the type of librarian I want to be, I’ve created the following video podcast. This is Episode 1, of what I plan to be a series, on disrupting the library strategic planning process in service of greater library and information profession goals.

The credits and citations are at the end of the podcast. I created the theme song with perplexity.ai, using a prompt that requested a theme song in the style of a 70’s children’s educational program, centered on library strategic planning. I used lyricstomusic.ai for the music, and Canva to create the graphics.

Spoiler Alert: It’s Me

An ordinary extraordinary day!

7:00 AM — The Sidekick Appears

If I’m lucky I’m able to get the bed made before Minnie, my 15-year-old toy poodle, is asking for breakfast. If I’m home she’s never more than a few feet away, and she may get her MLIS before I do – she listens to every class video!

 11:00 AM — My Happy Place(s)

If I have my towel, and have managed to escape a bout of Vogon poetry, and it’s a week day I end up in my office – one of my happy places! If it’s the weekend then I’m venturing deep into the most amazing forests or parklands I can get to in the time allotted.

This is a secret lake I love, where I sit and watch green herons, swans, and listen to the loons call to each other.

💬 2:00 PM — What I Do (and Why)

As someone with a lifelong passion (some might say obsession) for learning things, working in a library to help others have the same experience is very satisfying. If I spend the rest of my life helping the world access libraries I will consider it a life well-lived.

🎵 6:00 PM — The Soundtrack

In the evening it’s family project time: messing with the YouTube algorithm. We use a stream-of-consciousness approach for music, clips, and weird British offerings. It’s always our goal to try and reach the point where the suggestions area is blank!

🌙 9:00 PM — Looking Ahead

While you may not find a lot of personal social media work of mine online there’s a good reason for it! I spend all day on the computer at work so I really try and unplug in my free time. I weave, paint, hike, and recharge to bring my best back to the library.

Welcome to my blog! Come in, stay a while, bring coffee if you like – because I only have tea. (Fun fact: I’ve never had a cup of coffee!)
