It is a space for people to try out new technologies and ideas, and librarians should seek out opportunities to be teachers to support patrons in different learning environments (Stephens, 2014). In reading this module, the phrase \u201clifelong learning\u201d was not new to me. The last two academic libraries I worked at have included \u201clifelong learning\u201d in their mission statements. In the context of an academic library, I understand this means we are not just preparing our students to be successful at school. We are also preparing them to be successful in life. We need to help them develop critical thinking and literacy skills. Yes, they will need these skills to pass their class right now, but they will also need these skills in the future to be responsible and fulfilled employees and citizens. While I understood this lifelong leaning concept in the broadest sense, it seemed more like a buzzword to me than something that I could actively incorporate into my daily work. However, this module\u2019s readings got me thinking about things I could initiate in my own work.<\/p>\n The Digital Promise (2016) article was really inspiring to me. It talked about the Chicago Public Library\u2019s Digital Literacy Hub, which offers online classes about basic digital literacy lessons. The library knows that helping patrons improve their technology skills will also be beneficial for their academic endeavors. I think there is a real opportunity to use digital literacy hub type lessons in my library, specifically to do more outreach and instruction with our adult basic education (ABE) students. I work in a small technical college library. ABE classes cover essential skills (reading, writing, math). Most of our ABE students are working towards a GED diploma or are English as a second language students, and there is a great age range among students. My college\u2019s ABE program was moved to the main campus last year after their satellite office was closed. Since this move, the library has made efforts to better support these programs. We recently added two new collections to our physical books\u2014an Adult Ed\/ELL collection and an Emerging Readers collection (easier reading level fiction books). These book additions are a great step, but this module has helped me realize there is more we can do to engage with these students.<\/p>\n For example, we have a large circulating laptop collection (about 250 laptops). When we checkout laptops to students, we tell them if they have any problems or questions about the laptops to go to see the IT Helpdesk. This is probably adequate for our traditional college-aged students who have grown up using laptops in their classrooms. However, a lot of the ABE students are older and might benefit from more intentional instruction related to using a laptop and all the great opportunities that entails. I\u2019m not sure what that instruction would look like. I like Chicago Public Library\u2019s Digital Literacy Hub. However, if a student is unfamiliar and uncomfortable with using a computer, I don\u2019t want to just push them toward an online course. Hands-on programming or instruction sessions could be beneficial, and I think this would also be a great opportunity to collaborate with the ABE faculty as well.<\/p>\n I have never done targeted digital literacy instruction, and I really liked the Park (2016) article that named eight areas of digital intelligence that everyone should be prepared for: digital identity, digital use, digital safety, digital security, digital emotional intelligence, digital communication, digital literacy, digital right. I think this would be a great outline to follow to prepare an info lit session. These competencies go beyond just helping someone complete basic computer tasks and would help set someone up for success in their academic journey and in life.<\/p>\n References<\/strong><\/p>\n Digital Promise.
