Infinite Learning Reflection: Library as Classroom

Photo by Mikhail Nilov from Pexels. As a future children’s librarian, one of my biggest goals is to create safe learning spaces for children. This is why I felt the need to develop a mindfulness program for my Innovation Strategy and Roadmap. Teaching middle schoolers skills for their careers as adults is a logical next step to explore, as I want to cover all age groups under youth services.  As “90% of the entire population will be connected to the internet within 10 years” (Park, 2016), it is important to introduce children to STEM learning and incorporate digital skills into their learning experiences. Emerging technologies develop from these sectors rapidly…

The Power of Stories Reflection Blog: Listening Labs

Photo by Enzo Tommasi on Unsplash As a hobbyist writer (of fiction and television) and avid audiobook listener, I understand that words have power. The creativity shown through storytelling is a way to form bonds with people who may have never connected and is important for building community. Patrons can express themselves with narrative inquiries and choose emojis to garner feedback for the library instead of asking regular survey questions. Another unconventional way to incorporate storytelling into the library is through listening labs. My library regularly gets donations of older media like CDs, VHS tapes, and DVDs. Our Friends of the Library group has trouble selling these items and has…

    New Horizons Reflection Blog: Microcredentials

Note. Image generated using ChatGPT(DALLE) from the prompt create a picture for microcredentials with a Black woman As librarians, it is our job to spot emerging trends, keep up with new technologies, and work to become trendsetters in our communities. Career services are essential to stay up to date with at libraries as these are important resources for people seeking jobs in our community. One key concern about technology becoming a staple in our way of life is the increase in economic disparities between those who have access to technology and those who do not. This affects people who are actively looking for jobs “as those who are highly connected…

Hyperlinked Environments & Issues Reflection Blog: AI, the way of the future

AI literacy is essential for an information professional, so I must become more familiar with this emerging technology. I used Canva’s Dream Lab to craft a graphic for my blog. Figure 1 is unimpressive and has words in gibberish, while Figure 2 is just what I was looking for. Figure 1 A chart about AI Note. Image generated using Canva (Dream Lab) from the prompt make a graphic for a blog about AI. Figure 2 A cute robot in a library Note. Hyperlinked Community Reflection Blog: Wellness Resources at the Library

Aunt Flow. https://shop.goauntflow.com/collections/dispensers/products/estrogen-model-e-dispense When listening to the lecture for this week, the first line, “The Library reaches ALL Users” stuck out to me (Stephens, n.d.). I was inspired to see the Lock-In Sleepover at DOKK1, a personal reference desk that eliminates barriers, and a community closet for resources. These examples focus on the community aspects of a library and uplifting with wellness. We must assess the community’s needs by surveying the community. Smith (2017) discusses gathering data-based information to secure grant funding. Madison Public Library uncovered growing racial disparities between Black and white people in the community. They addressed this issue by…

    Assignment X – Participatory Libraries

Colman-McGaw, C. (2021, February 23). Teens: How to volunteer virtually with the library [Photograph]. The New York Public Library. https://www.nypl.org/blog/2021/02/23/teens-become-virtual-volunteers Patron participation helps make the library a more welcoming place. This is particularly important for children and teenagers who are finding themselves. The library can be an excellent place for them to learn and grow as individuals. Participatory libraries help patrons exchange “knowledge without curriculum and administrators” (Stephens, 2011, p. 81). Patron participation allows everyone to be heard. The videos from Module 4: Participatory Service & Transparency excited me about technologies libraries have found to seek input from patrons. The Surface and Flickr App gave children the opportunity to…
