I worked at a nonprofit, on the edge of two social ecologies: real estate and philanthropy, consulting on community space projects for Google.org, <a href=\"https:\/\/socialimpact.linkedin.com\/incommon\/san-francisco\">LinkedIn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/chanzuckerberg.com\/communityspace\/\">CZI<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.warriors.com\/generation-thrive\/spaces\/\">Golden State Warriors Foundation<\/a>. I facilitated a network of several nonprofit-centered spaces that uphold the shared vision of facilities that foster connection, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calendow.org\/conference-centers\/\">CalEndow<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/about-us\/conference-centers\/san-francisco-conference-center\/\">KFF<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/omnicommons.org\/wiki\/Welcome_to_the_Omni_Commons\">Omni Commons,<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restoreoakland.org\/community-spaces\/\">Restore Oakland<\/a>. Because of this work experience, I immediately resonated with the Four-Space Model (Jochumsen et al., 2012). In the Bay Area, there were plenty of initiatives that tried to answer to all four needs: inspiration space, learning space, performative space, and meeting space. The TEDx Talk embedded below is an example of the conversations that fueled the visions at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Changing the narratives with futuristic thinking: youth engagement | Ilana Lipsett | TEDxArochukwu\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7gVMh_kyTVs?start=877&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Replace the term &#8220;community space&#8221; with &#8220;libraries,&#8221; and you&#8217;ll find there&#8217;s plenty of overlap in objectives and shared strategies. The key points in <strong>Module 4<\/strong> highlight how libraries create and facilitate connections. For example, I really enjoyed Shannon Mattern&#8217;s piece in the <em>Places<\/em> journal. Our libraries function as part of infrastructural ecologies:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u00a0&#8220;And we must consider how those infrastructures can embody the epistemological, political, economic and cultural values that we want to define our communities&#8221;, <em>(Mattern, 2014).<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Perhaps my favorite aspect of a future in library work is that I can continue committing to the purposeful work of increasing access and bridging communities through participatory practices. As Mattern reiterates:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Public libraries are often seen as \u201copportunity institutions,\u201d opening doors to, and for, the disenfranchised&#8230; A <a href=\"http:\/\/nycfuture.org\/research\/publications\/branches-of-opportunity\">recent report<\/a> by the Center for an Urban Future highlighted the benefits to immigrants, seniors, individuals searching for work, public school students and aspiring entrepreneurs: \u201cNo other institution, public or private, does a better job of reaching people who have been left behind in today\u2019s economy, have failed to reach their potential in the city\u2019s public school system or who simply need help navigating an increasingly complex world.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;color: #333333\">It truly takes a village &#8211; especially cross-sector partnerships and hyperlinked approaches &#8211; to build a resilient safety net for all. When we are hyperlinked, we are less likely to allow each other to fall through the cracks. If social services and resources can be accessed <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">in libraries,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u00a0if civic engagement,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">relationship-building, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pps.org\/article\/what-is-placemaking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">placemaking<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"> can be deepened through library programs and small daily interactions of care, we stand to strengthen the social threads that bind us <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;color: #333333\">in a holistic, healthy ecosystem. Libraries are where certain people who may not receive the dignity and respect of being treated as patrons, clients, or constituents elsewhere are intentionally welcomed and integrated into the iterative design and evolution of a place they also belong to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Libraries blend the edges of information science, third spaces, and a rad petri dish of socialism. I&#8217;m excited to be entering this field and bring my nonprofit experience to library management and budget-conscious program production.
