Inspiration Report: Game Rooms in Seattle Public Libraries

My plan is to propose the implementation of permanent, bookable gaming rooms at Seattle Public Libraries (SPL). They will include technology based gaming (consoles & PC gaming), and also tabletop games.

While many libraries provide clubs and workshops for games & gamers, most do not provide a permanent space to game. Also, many patrons are not able to afford these amenities, and may not be able to experience gaming otherwise. The whole concept of a library is to provide everyone with equal access and opportunity, and these rooms will help with that. The library is meant to be the “people’s university” and a center made for and by the patrons (Stephens, 2013).

The PDF was too large to post here, so here is a LINK to view the presentation on a public website I’ve created.

  1. Hi Millicent,

First of all, I love the design of your presentation! It’s so on-theme! I second your idea how a permanent gaming space would be awesome. Speaking from my own experience, my library does provide plenty of cool programs, however, there really is a lack of a permanent “attraction” so to speak, outside of the book collection and computers. This would just be amazing!

  2. @inabookbind I’m honestly blown away by your presentation design! Adding the animated text was a great touch for the video game topic–I felt like I was unlocking new lore as I scrolled. I like your point about the library gaming spaces helping regulate time spent playing, though I agree about the positives of gaming as well. A close relative has met some of her best friends that way, and, as someone who struggles with chronic conditions, it’s her favorite and most feasible means of socializing regularly. Great job!

  3. This is an incredible idea, and I have to echo what @pfulumirani said above– I feel like the more permanent nature of the game room is a real… well… game changer. Pardon my pun. 🙂 I’ve never seen a dedicated space like this in a library, and I love how you presented why it’s relevant to the specific library’s community. Overall, great idea, and great presentation.
