The Hyperlinked Library intention aligned with many of the features of the new library. Here is a quick tour and reflection on the new library. I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.

The San Diego County Library recently opened a new branch in the Casa de Oro neighborhood. The community had a small library located in a strip mall that was not equipped to serve its residents. After years of planning the community is very excited to finally be getting a new library. The library opened in September. The new library is beautiful and is created with people in mind. The lobby area is large and open which is meant to encourage people to have a minute to calm down and orient themselves before entering the space. There are high ceilings and lots of windows to let natural light in. The windows and high ceilings create a feeling of being outdoors which makes the space feel open and fresh. My favorite part is the Poets Patio located in the center of the library.

The patio has six large tables and two modular seating areas. There are plants and the area is 75% shaded. The furniture is made out of wood so it doesn’t get very hot and is comfortable. The patio is an ideal place for families, and other groups to meet. Unfortunately food is not allowed inside the library but it is allowed on the patio. This is important because it means people can stay at the library longer and eat lunch or a snack while visiting. This can be especially useful for families with young children. I almost always take my breaks and lunches out on the patio to get some fresh air and decompress. The patio is accessible from the computer area, community room and adult area.

Another space that was designed with people in mind was the Homework Center. The Homework center is sandwiched between the Kids area and the Teen Room. The area has large tables perfect for group activities and easy to clean laminate flooring. The pace also has a large whiteboard to facilitate group activities. The Homework Center has a large storage area equipped with basic school supplies like pencils, pens, paper, crayons, scissors, tape and glue. The supplies are easy to find and available for anyone who needs them.

The Homework Center is one of the most used spaces in the library. It has attracted home-schooling families, teens, and families. There is also a 3D printer and sink for use during programming.

The kids area is colorful and inviting. The soft seating and wall mounted activity centers encourage children and families to stay in the library longer. The area has large windows and lots of natural light. The area is carpeted so that young children can comfortably sit on the ground and play. The shelving is lower to ground and accessible to children. There is a built-in Bluetooth speaker for storytime and other programming. There is even a patio with special furniture for children.

The Laptop Kiosk allows library users to check out a laptop from a large vending machine and sit anywhere in the library. This means computer users are no longer tied to the computer area and can work on the patio or anywhere they please.

The kiosk has twenty-four laptops for check-out. Anyone can check out a laptop as long as they have a library card. There are no age restrictions so teens can come in and check them out in case their school devices run out of battery. I often check out a laptop during my lunch break and sit on the patio and get some schoolwork done.

Overall the new Casa de Oro library was well thought out. It centers around people and encourages community engagement and ease of use. The library has been popular with the community and will continue to provide a space for information sharing and discovery. I would say that it aligns with the Hyperlinked library goals and spirit.

Thanks for reading and have a great week,

Raquel Castanon

Reflection on Hyperlinked Library Module As I was exploring the Hyperlinked Library module I was lucky enough to be part of the team opening a new library.
