But\u00a0so\u00a0do quick gestures: a personalized reading suggestion, a kind\u00a0reply on social media, a creative response to feedback. Sometimes a single conversation\u00a0can shift\u00a0someone&#8217;s\u00a0view of what the library\u00a0is. Sometimes a dog-eared note on a\u00a0whiteboard invites a flood of community stories. Ask: What small moment will you make\u00a0possible today?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I LIVE for small moments. At a time when \u201cbig moments\u201d (particularly joyful ones) feel scarce,\u00a0boy do\u00a0I appreciate the small ones.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0talkin\u2019 my favorite song plays on the radio,\u00a0my\u00a0colleague\u00a0surprises me with Starbucks,\u00a0or a kindergartener asks me to read one of my favorite books to them (basically any <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Elephant &amp; Piggie<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0book by Mo Willems. Or\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dog Vs. Strawberry<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0by Nelly Buchet, because to properly read it aloud, one must\u00a0use\u00a0their best sports\u00a0announcer\u00a0voice. Add it to your read-aloud rotation\u00a0asap).\u00a0Creating that feeling for my patrons?\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0one of my favorite parts of the job!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dog vs. Strawberry\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y6Dzi7d42KI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em>Added bonus of giving a read-aloud your all- the students will pick up on your joy and enthusiasm for reading! Effortless library fun.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Something I learned in a past course was that,\u00a0in order for\u00a0your patrons and your community to be invested in your library, they must be invested in you and your library staff.\u00a0To me this means getting to know them and building a rapport, which is why\u00a0I enjoy the hospitality aspect of library work.\u00a0My boss is really good at this, and one reason is because she is gifted at small talk.\u00a0It never stays small for long. She asks deeper, intentional\u00a0questions\u00a0early on\u00a0and makes the conversation fun and meaningful, rather than surface-level.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I admire\u00a0her skill\u00a0and I have tried my hand at it too, especially when I spot a\u00a0lone,\u00a0new student seeking refuge in\u00a0the\u00a0safe haven\u00a0of the library.\u00a0No one wants to be the person standing in a corner\u00a0during orientation,\u00a0snacking on\u00a0a\u00a0bagel by themselves.\u00a0Yes,\u00a0I did witness\u00a0that scenario\u00a0in my\u00a0library\u00a0and I\u00a0was\u00a0very happy\u00a0to introduce myself and\u00a0talk to\u00a0the student!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I love being able to greet students by name when they enter the\u00a0library, and\u00a0follow up on\u00a0how they are doing. How did the test go that they studied for all last\u00a0block? Are they ready for the next book in the series they are\u00a0currently obsessed\u00a0with?\u00a0Maybe they\u00a0recommend a new book we should add to our collection!\u00a0I\u00a0aim\u00a0to\u00a0congratulate\u00a0as many students as I can\u00a0on their\u00a0great performance\u00a0in the\u00a0school musical over the weekend.\u00a0The librarians love supporting the theatre program!\u00a0All of these are examples of ways I can make students feel seen and valued at my\u00a0library, and, as Stephens notes, \u201cbuild\u00a0connection\u00a0and\u00a0community.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For this reflection blog post, I was inspired by Beyond Buzzwords: Ten Invitations to Build Library Connection and Community by\u00a0@michael.
