Hello Mr. Casey,
What a state-of-the-art, and ground-breaking collaboration (and beauty), you have in your new library branch. I am really intrigued by the space sharing with Thrive and am wondering what the process was to choose this company to share your space? I read that the mayor wanted something educational or business-focused but there…[Read more] -

@michael and everybody,
So, I’ve been using Feedly and I notice that in the “Hyperlinked Library Course Blog & Activity” section of Feedly I see some people’s Assignment Xs but not that many (or my own that I published a couple days ago) even though if I go in through “Sites” on the website I see many more Assignment X posts. Wondering if there is…[Read more] -

What a great idea! I bet your students love this enhancement. It sort of aligns with how we search for information online: we don’t search for books by an author whose last name starts with a “B”, we search by, generally, a topic or genre. Sure, sometimes we search by an author but I bet your books within their respective genres are…[Read more] -

It’s strange, but if I access this post via Feedly (which is what I did when I first commented) my posts display. But if I go in through the “site wide tab” they don’t. -

@maricarmen Not sure why – maybe you put a space between the “mary” and the “ann”? It’s @maryann

Your post is powerful and clearly makes some strong connections between the effects of the Covid pandemic and libraries as workplaces and service-providers. I really like and agree with this point “the value of libraries has been highlighted as a resource serving the vital needs of their communities, not just a building housing b…[Read more] -

Hello @maricarmen,
I have a book called The Little Book of Calmness that has a quote I keep in my mind and that I think fits what you are aiming for. Of course, we don’t always have the luxury of being calm or turning away tasks or people, but maybe if we at least have the notion in our heads that, sometimes, it’s OK to say “no”, I think it is…[Read more]-
Mary Ann (don’t know why but I can’t @ you), I appreciate the advice you shared. It’s a good reminder to practice that, to learn our limits about how much we can do/how much we can give. I agree, it is healthy to say “no.” I struggle with deciding what to say “no” to, but with time, I’m sure I’ll get a better handle on that!

Hi @biblobrowsing,
Thanks for the reply! I do enjoy canning – it is so satisfying to look in your pantry and see all those beautiful jars. Tasty to eat, too. I usually do raspberry (from my yard) and blueberry (picked in the wild) jams and, depending on my time, maybe tomatoes, smoked salmon (a lot of work but so delicious). You should try your…[Read more] -

I wonder what the thinking was in replacing “commit suicide” with “death by suicide”? It does kind of seem like the phrase “commit suicide” is too vague, even passive and weak and doesn’t tell it like it is – if you do it, you are unalive or causing your death. Definitely thought provoking. Well, thanks for sharing. -

@michael How fascinating! (If a heart-breaking subject)
I, too, knew nothing about the term mascara – now I’m inspired to learn more of these types of workaround words and phrases. I can see how using these alternatives to fool an algorithm could be useful. It also occurred to me that, as Mychal is making his video within the library, using the…[Read more] -

Also, wondering if his use of words like “unalive” as opposed to “kill” or “commit suicide” was for a reason? Like, to avoid the harshness of the other words?

Thanks for sharing- have to check out MFM (I had to google it). Seems fun that people can call in with their own stories and also that there’s a humorous slant to it. Casefiles is definitely not comedy!
