I finished “One Day” on Netflix… stunning.
-
@michael What is that about? I see it advertised but I don’t know the premise.
-
@matilda I don’t want to give too much away, but it is a story of a couple that meet on the night of graduation from the University of Edinburgh and the time they spend together over the years. It’s called one day because every episode takes place on the same date in a different year.
-
That does sound intriguing. Sort of a riff along the theme of Same Time, Next Year. A movie that I sadly cannot seem to find anywhere.
-
@matilda I saw that movie when it came out. I was 13! Perhaps too young but I loved the story!
-
And wow…it is elusive. Only thing I can find is the DVD: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001CNRBG/?tag=broadwaywor01-20
-
I’m pretty sure I have only seen it once in my life. If I’ve even seen it all the way through? It was one of those movies that sometimes played on Saturday afternoons on TV when I was young but then became hard to find when I got old enough to be interested.
BUT right after I commented I was actually finally able to check my library’s…[Read more]

Inspiration: Photos from My Day at Lake Villa District Library Hello all! I had a good day trip to Chicagoland. I am so knocked out by Lake Villa District Library: spaces, services and staff! Here is a gallery to inspire. Click the photos for larger versions.
-
@Michael, awesome pix! Nice to photo the empty space so you can really get a feel for its capabilities. Unfortunately makes my library seem to pail in comparison!
-
@michael This library is absolutely stunning. It’s a space I would definitely go to if I lived there.
I love the “If you liked…” book suggestions and how it’s displayed and how the information is sourced. Same goes for the Library of Things and how it’s displayed in a similar way. Very cool. It’s like you’re shopping but it’s all free (borrow). Very cool. Very clean and neat and open. Love the use of big windows to let in natural light and views.
-
@christines Yes – agree…so much space! The views were incredible.
-
-
Their front-facing displays look like they would be very effective! Nice to have that much shelf space so they can really promote individual titles. And I love the Library of Things! Thanks for sharing.

I would have loved this as a kid. Kind of like experiencing the book “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” in the real world and a library instead of a museum.
-
@laurele, I LOVE that you brought up that reference!! I keep seeing it crop up in circulation at work but had never read it as a kid. It was, however, a beloved TV movie of mine filmed in the 70s, but they called it “The Hideaways.” Here it is on YouTube if you’re interested (really funny costumes, funky music and a cameo of Madeleine Kahn): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AC5JhVohSI
-
@lauraw They made a movie out of this? I had no idea!
-
@matilda, it’s a MUST watch!
-
I’m gonna find it!
-
-
-
Thanks so much for distracting me from my SJSU schoolwork! How did I also not know there was a TV movie of this classic book?? The music in the intro is enough to bring me straight back to my childhood.
-
-
@laurele A++ reference and I completely agree!
-
-
@michael This is a fantastic idea! Our local library sometimes does “teen lock-ins” at night where they play games and other organized activities and evidently have a lot of candy, but to my knowledge they’ve incorporated a read-a-thon component.
-
@matilda The lock in sounds like fun!
-
-
Wow, what fun it is to have a sleepover at a library. I love to play games, tell good stories, and read excellent books.
-
@francesmorovat Yay to stories and excellent books! 📚

@Michael, hope you find relief soon in whichever way works for you. I love yoga (just took a class this morning!) and love that it is such meditative and holistic practice for the mind and body.
-
Also I’ve been finding it hard to regain momentum after Spring Break 🥴.
-
@lauraw Yoga and a series of stretches is helping…as is being mindful of the million times I day I bend forward to mess with the boys or load the dishwasher.
I too have some issues with momentum…especially as the weather improves up here.

This is so fun to fantasize about! Living and working in Australia–the episode of “House Hunters International” just writes itself. I really appreciate how the posting opens up with a Land Acknowledgement of the Indigenous people to the area.
-
@lauraw Yes – House Hunters International FTW. It’s a very different process to buy a house I have heard…bidding and such.
The Australian folks and New Zealanders have made the Land Acknowledgement of the Indigenous an ingrained event in everything. It is always so well done. When I was in New Zealand, they actually sang and Maori song to the conference.

Thank you! I still can’t quite wrap my head around the fact that I finished it. I only decided to do it kind of last minute, because I was really leaning towards a thesis for most of my time with the program, but it ended up being really fulfilling.
That is amazing to see yours as a hard copy! I kept wondering about that as I did mine in Canvas.

Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful support. I just can’t believe I’m so close to the biggest day of my life.

Inspiration: SFPL Strategic Plan Please see: There’s so much good in the document. I don’t know what to highlight. Take a look if you have a moment, you may find inspiration here for something for your blogging or the inspiration report.
-
Wow! Now that is what I call a Strategic Plan!! It is so informative and engaging. I love that library system. I took my daughter and her best friend to the one in Chinatown just a few weeks ago. Very welcoming and lots of services in a tiny little library. Plenty of computers, comfy chairs, and an awesome scanner for anyone to use with clear instructions for operation. SFPL also has the Jail and Reentry Services reference program in which inmates can email reference questions. Inmates have heavily restricted internet access. If you visit SF, you need to go to a Giants game, visit a library, and eat some dim sum in Chinatown.
-
OMG! Yay! I’ve been following the process of SFPL Strategic Plan for over a year now. It’s been a process for them and it’s been really interesting watch some of the board meetings and see what it takes to create a new strategic plan. I’ve learned so much, behind the scenes kind of stuff (thanks to YouTube SFPL board meetings). I’ve been too busy to see updates since February so I’m glad you posted it! I can’t wait to read it! @christines
-
This is so exciting to see! Thanks for sharing. I had reviewed the SFPL site for their strategic plan back when I first started the program, so this is really cool to see the latest version.
I tell you, this program has made me an absolute strategic plan nerd.
-
What stands out to me is the amount of community involvement. Since the plan so directly affects them, it is obvious to include them in making decisions. The library I work at recently created a 5 year strategic plan and was on the team of 7 members made up of library employees, friends volunteers, Advisory Board member, and one County Supervisor. While we did ‘ask’ the community what they wanted – though surveys and community forums, we did not include them in the actual creation of the plan. If I had to do it over again, I would suggest that the community be more involved and take a less on from the SFPL strategic plan.
-
@emmizo @christines @matilda @denise Thanks for your thoughts on this. I added it into one of our modules too.
Denise – good thoughts about including the community!
Matilda – totally a planning 🤓 too!

-
Things are a little chaotic recently for me, but overall I am doing okay
-
@kmg333, hope things settle down soon and you can enjoy “Spring Break” : )
-
-
@Michael, thank you for your thoughtful post. There are no shortage of things to worry about/do/hamster wheel over. I just checked out this book called “The Worry(less) Book: Feel Strong, Find Calm and Tame Your Anxiety,” by Rachel Brian. It’s a kids graphic novel and my daughter and I were just reading the tactics for your “anxiety tool box” and practicing them together. One was ‘square breathing,’ ‘grounding your body’ (5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 smells, 1 taste), and keeping a worry journal, etc. I LOVE it!!
-
@lauraw Thanks for the book suggestion. One of my favorite quotes about anxiety came from a podcast. I listen to years ago: “anxiety is a liar.”
-
-
@michael Thank you for checking in on us. I am doing ok trying to balance work and school. I feel lucky that I am working in a library so all the material I am studying I can apply to my job.
-
Thank you for checking in, @michael. I’ve been incredibly sick for the last two weeks, but I’m finally feeling more like myself. I’ve been keeping up with the reading material but I think I’m echoing a lot of my classmates in saying that times are chaotic. We all sincerely appreciate having an attentive and considerate professor like you!
-
@gilbertmaryjoy Hope you are feeling better!
-
-
Thanks for the checking in @michael! Slow and steady is how I’m rollin these days but all is good!
-
Yes, thanks for checking in @michael! It’s Spring Break for my work school so I’ve got a chance to slow down and catch up. It is much needed these days. The fluid due dates for this class are really a help but I still want to stay on top of the schedule. May will be a very busy month for me so I need to not fall behind! Thank you.
-
To all who commented… thanks for sharing where you are at right now. I hope you can enjoy a bit of break and breathe a bit.
-
I am back to the land of the living finally! Things have been so chaotic. I had an unexpected shot at a big promotion at work which took some prepping, then a sick child, then the other child and myself got Covid, which we’d managed to avoid all this time. When that whirlwind of havoc was done, I felt like I was several weeks behind on my e-portfolio so I prioritized trying to plow through a big chunk of that.
But now, I’ve landed the promotion, everyone is well, and I completed my e-port yesterday and was informed this morning that it is approved and done. Huzzah! I feel like I have something of my life back now.
-
@matilda Congrats on the big promotion. Congrats on the portfolio! Congrats on getting past Covid!
-
Thank you!!
