@anjali Thank you for sharing Recess Therapy!! It as been a rough first couple weeks of school and those made my day. You probably get moments like that in your book clubs sometimes. I was an elementary school teacher, but my first (and current) library job was a high school library. I was so nervous about moving up to the big kids, but I’ve…[Read more]

Assignment X – Libraries: A Citadel of Solitude or a Humming Hive? A few months ago I was a bit thrown off when a teacher in my school came over to my desk and asked why students were being so loud in […]

    • Hi Lynn,
What an interesting topic! I confess, when I go into a library I still expect to be shushed like I was in my childhood library. I love that this is no longer the case and that libraries have accepted that there is bound to be some modicum of noise. The needs of the user are important and it looks like you take the needs of your library’s users very seriously. Great post!

  • Emma, this is such an important step forward for libraries. The fear many have about being late and racking up a fine is very real. I see it daily in my high school library. But so is the relief in their faces when I tell them not to worry, we don’t do overdue fines at my school. We are in the business of building relationships and creating a…[Read more]

@michael Oooh… I always get a little jealous of those who actually have fall. Aug/Sep/Oct are some of the hottest months in San Diego and I’m so looking forward to some chillier weather. Of course, hot is a relative term when talking about San Diego. Still that cup of tea looks lovely!

Mary Ann, your response really made me think that perhaps I need to flip this question around and have the students let us know what is challenging for them. This could be a really interesting discussion if we have staff giving advice to their younger selves and our students anonymously voice their concerns about growing up all in the same space.

Sound advice, but sometimes so very hard to do… looking at you, Introduction Discussion Board Posts! I’ve found as I get older, that practicing accepting myself as I am in all my messy variations helps me with not worrying as much about what others (and their unseen messy variations) think of me. If you have any ideas of activities that can…[Read more]

    • @biblobrowsing Activities…. kitchen dance parties with your favorite music are fun. Also – I have found it feels good to speak up a bit more when I used to be quiet. Maybe that comes with age too. Also expressing feelings out loud. If I am feeling something sure as heck my friends and family probably have too.

Mari, I think that is wonderful advice! Sometimes our students are nervous to break out of the mold they created or someone else created for themselves, but trying new things is helpful for learning about yourself and provide new creative or mental health outlets.

Hi Claire! Your post resonates a lot with me. I just finished a 3 class summer (fit it in while I’m not working) and this class is something I’ve been looking forward to for a while. Thank you for your work in the schools. High school teachers deal with a lot and have so much placed on their shoulders. I see first hand the difference a good…[Read more]

Hi @naomimcd! That is definitely sun-napping at its best! Congratulations on the new job! Also, I love weeding as well. It feels so nice to clean up the collection and make it more relevant to our users. Wishing you the best this semester!

Hi Friends! I’m working with my high school students to create mental health awareness activities in the library at lunch once a week. If you could talk to your high school self, what piece of mental health advice would you give your younger self?

    • @biblobrowsing Hi Lynn, I think that’s a great question. I would advise my high school self to have some courage and try the things I wanted to do back then. I remember wanting to do more writing and pick hiking back up. I think those activities would’ve had a great impact on my mental health. I would have also encouraged myself to be less self…[Read more]

    • @biblobrowsing This is amazing. I think one thing I would say is try not to worry so much about what other people are thinking about me. Be yourself! (now that I am in my late 50s… I am over what other people think!)

    • Great topic and one I may share with my own teenagers. I would say be true to yourself and pursue your interests (even if not typical) and trust your own opinions and ideas. I can remember many times in high school and even college I would think of a comment or question in class and talk myself out of voicing it, thinking it was too obvious or not…[Read more]

    Hi Mary Ann,

What a beautiful bounty… both in your garden and the furry kind! I’m curious, do you do any kind of preserving food with all the yummy things growing in your garden? My in-laws came to visit a few weeks ago and taught me how to can some cherries they brought and I felt so accomplished! I’m glad to work with you this semester.

    Hi Brittany,
No wonder it is crowded in the summer, that is such a beautiful place. I can easily picture myself with a good book overlooking the water. I wasn’t aware that Carnegie libraries were built outside of the United States. Thank you for teaching me something new. Enjoy your semester!

    Hi Kathrina,
I started fall of 2021 and will graduate this spring. It has been quite a journey, hasn’t it? Thank you for working as a school librarian. I work at a district that does not have teacher librarians and it makes a big difference for the school community when you have a teacher librarian working with teachers to support students.…[Read more]
