Katelyn,
This is such a cool presentation. I like your acknowledgment that the McDermott Academic Library is not public, but would still benefit from a makerspace because it would join the top 1/3 of libraries. This seems like a great strategy that would speak to your audience. Overall, I feel like I learned more about a sector of librarianship I wasn’t familiar with. Your well-researched presentation also gives justification for how this unique service group could benefit from these services. Great job!
Thanks Ron! When brainstorming for this assignment I was struggling with the concepts of innovative technologies and what my audience should be. In my time at SJSU, I’ve rarely seen the military community discussed, especially not in regard to their academic libraries. Makerspaces aren’t new concepts, however they do take on a different kind of lens in academic spaces and it was my goal to capture that.
I have to admit that I get excited every time I hear or read the word ‘makerspace’ because I associate it with fun and creativity, which is why they exist! Ron Harris does make a wonderful point that your presentation is unique because the main demographic you are targeting is the military community rather than the general public. I do think that makerspaces in military bases can also serve as a place where military personnel can relax when they are not working or studying.
This library is restricted access for military cadets and faculty, but yes, they too need fun and creativity! They are such bright people that I can only imagine the things they could invent and create together. They have self-arranged group crafts in the study rooms, so I imagine if they had access to a makerspace they would let their creativity overflow!
