At the Member Services and Reference Desks, we have one Cantonese\/Mandarin\/Japanese speaker (that\u2019s me!), one Mandarin speaker, one Spanish speaker, one Tamil speaker, and two Tagalog speakers. Still, there are times when we encounter members who speak languages that we are not familiar with, and technology can come to our rescue.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Real-time Machine Translation<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mobile apps such as <strong>Google Translate<\/strong> and <strong>Apple Translate<\/strong> offer convenient camera and voice translation for quick transactions in the library.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ChatGPT<\/strong> and other AI chatbots are great tools for translating written text into other languages.\n<ul>\n<li>Use case 1: A reference librarian uses <strong>Google Translate<\/strong>\u2019s camera feature to translate a flyer about our summer reading program.<\/li>\n<li>Use case 2: A staff member uses <strong>Apple Translate<\/strong>\u2019s voice feature\u00a0to help a worried mother who has lost her child in the library.<\/li>\n<li>Use case 3: I used <strong>ChatGPT<\/strong> to translate our Summer Reading program materials from English to Traditional Chinese, and only needed to make minimal changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-42 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu\/bravenewhyperlinkedworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/579\/2026\/07\/unnamed-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu\/bravenewhyperlinkedworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/579\/2026\/07\/unnamed-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu\/bravenewhyperlinkedworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/579\/2026\/07\/unnamed-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu\/bravenewhyperlinkedworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/579\/2026\/07\/unnamed.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Machine Transcription<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AI transcription services such as <strong>JotMe<\/strong> can help with translation, transcription, chatbot support, and meeting notes in over 200 languages.\n<ul>\n<li>Use case: Library staff use <strong>JotMe<\/strong> to turn speech into text when community members share their stories via Zoom and other video formats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-44 aligncenter\" style=\"font-size: 12px\" src=\"http:\/\/287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu\/bravenewhyperlinkedworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/579\/2026\/07\/ai-translation-vs-human-translation-Medium-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu\/bravenewhyperlinkedworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/579\/2026\/07\/ai-translation-vs-human-translation-Medium-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/287.hyperlib.sjsu.edu\/bravenewhyperlinkedworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/579\/2026\/07\/ai-translation-vs-human-translation-Medium.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Real-time ASL translation<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sign Language AI <\/strong>allows users to translate, compose, and search for ASL in real time on their website. <strong>Sorenson Communications<\/strong> is also developing an AI-driven sign language translation support tool that will translate a deaf individual\u2019s signs into English text, and then turn the hearing person\u2019s spoken response into text for the deaf user.\n<ul>\n<li>Use case: Our Library is located very close to the California School for the Deaf, so we often welcome members of the deaf community.
