The Great Poetry Exchange

Portrait of a Phenomenal Woman by Lava Thomas, 2024. Main Library, SFPL.

“Information helps you to see that you’re not alone. That there’s somebody in Mississippi and somebody in Tokyo who all have wept, who’ve all longed and lost, who’ve all been happy. So the library helps you to see, not only that you are not alone, but that you’re not really any different from everyone else. There may be details that are different, but a human being is a human being.” – Dr. Maya Angelou (SFArts, 2024).

  1. I really loved your presentation. Is this a program that you will actually be implementing? I love the idea of coming together at the end for a shared meal and open mic. It seems like such a wonderful way to mark the end of this great exchange. I definitely agree that this is something everyone could use right now. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Hi Rachel,

I have been hosting a series of dinners/brunches in Glen Canyon (open to anyone passing by) in San Francisco for the past couple of years with a friend and fellow artist. Our April event will be a little beta test of this idea. Maybe in 2026, it will be in collaboration with the library and community organizations. In the meantime, the poems are accessible and much needed.
