This inspiration report explores the Beijing Library as a model of emerging global library trends, focusing on three key areas: sustainability, digital integration, and user-centered architecture. Designed by Snøhetta and completed in 2024, the library blends cultural programming with environmental innovation. The inspiration report draws from Michael Stephens’s Wholehearted Librarianship, connecting the library’s design to values of empathy, well-being, and participatory service. The purpose of this report is to introduce these ideas to a library director.

Hi @ali0,
That is one gorgeous library! I am wondering if the levels are also accessible for people with disabilities? Is it built as a ramp and as stairs? The importance of architecture and design in public spaces cannot be denied. It attracts people to the place and affects how they feel spending time there.

Hi @daisychia I had the same thought when I was looking at the photos. Although I could not find a definitive answer, I would hope that the multi-levels are accessible. Great questions, really important to ask!
Hey @ali0! What a lovely report–and what a beautiful library! I love the interplay of architecture and visitor response–I think that design is a truly underrated piece of a society’s and culture’s bigger picture. Thanks so much for this informative report! Mei
