I just moved the file as a Video Podcast to Dropbox. Does this work for everyone?

Michael also wanted to share an article about the Innovation Revolution at GCPL.

@Michael Works for me! Wow, 9 challenges in the last 3 months of the year–8 by one person! Interesting. I’d love to know which books were challenged. One aspect that I thought was important to remember/learn from the Int. Freedom class (sorry I keep bringing that up!) is that when a customer asks to challenge an artifact in the collection, it’s important to make that person’s opinion feel heard, whether we agree with them or not. Many times people just want a sounding board.

@lauraw I believe most of the books were related to the LGBTQ+ community. Agree about feeling heard., The reconsideration form is so important too. One of my favorite questions on the one we used at My public library was what books would you suggest could replace this title?

@Michael Also, is it mostly children’s books which are questioned/challenged, I wonder? It seems in M. Casey’s responses about the process, that he makes sure the librarians who review the challenge must be parents who’ve raised children. Are there many cases where there are adult books that are challenged?

@lauraw I think it was mostly young adult titles or graphic novels. I don’t know how many cases there would be for adult books, because this current movement seems to be about “saving the children” and erasing the stories of people who are different.

I just had the opportunity to finally watch this. I am so grateful to my classmates for their insightful questions. Incredibly informative. Moms for Liberty instigated several bomb threats to the library in my hometown of Davis, CA. Never thought something like that would happen there. But yes, it’s scripted at the national level.

I did have a thought about librarians who leave due to the chronic stress of dealing with homeless patrons and patrons who have mental health issues. This seems to be on the rise in many urban libraries. It makes me wonder why there aren’t more dual degree programs available in MLIS/MS in social work?
